Creeping Bellflower is pretty (noxious) this time of year

The Town of Diamond Valley has taken to social media to remind people to keep an eye out for Creeping Bellflowers.

The Creeping Bellflower is a perennial weed with pretty purple, bell-shaped flowers, but, unfortunately, it is an invasive, noxious weed that spreads rapidly.

Noxious weeds are those that are considered harmful to agricultural or horticultural crops, natural habitats and ecosystems, or humans or animals.

Foothills residents may be eligible for Coronation Medal

Residents from Foothills County are eligible to be nominated for a royal medal.

To help celebrate the coronation of King Charles III, 30,000 Canadians will have their achievements and contributions to their community, province, territory, or country recognized and will receive a Coronation Medal.

Of those, 4,000 will be for members of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Each riding will have 20 coronation medals to give away to outstanding Canadians, including Foothills County.

There is time, but time is running out - Farm groups call for binding arbitration as strike deadline nears

For weeks now, the agriculture sector has been calling for action to avoid a potential rail strike urging the Federal Government to take action to stop the strike.

On Wednesday, with just hours left before the strike deadline for over 9000 CN and CPKC workers they gathered once again to voice their concerns.

United Way calling on all of Okotoks' performers for talent show

A talent show is being held for a good cause in Okotoks.

"Okotoks' Got Talent" is a new fundraiser event from the United Way Okotoks Partnership.

They're calling on Okotokians to show off their talents via video auditions.

Participants are advised to upload their videos to YouTube as "unlisted" so that only those with the link can view them.

In November, those who were selected based on their video will participate in live auditions at the Old Church Theatre, with the final talent show scheduled for March 7, 2025.

The threat of a national rail strike is looming closer; WGEA says Canada is dropping the ball

 the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference says the roughly 9000 CN and CPKC workers involved could walk out as of 12:01 am Thursday.

The Executive Director of the Western Grain Elevators Association (WGEA) Wade Sobkowich says a national rail strike involving both railways will have a major impact, as there is no Plan B.

According to the WGEA we move roughly 50 million tonnes of grain per day by rail in Canada.

Sobkowich says the railways on Tuesday started preparing for a work stoppage situation with both railways embargoing all Canadian-origin products.

Prime Minister calls on railways and the union to reach a deal

As the clock ticks down on the strike deadline there's an overwhelming call for the Canadian government to intervene and prevent a national rail strike.

For months now Canadian Pacific Kansas City, Canadian National and the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference have been at the bargaining table but to no avail.

On Sunday, the union announced that unless the parties reached a last-minute agreement, workers would be off the job as of 12:01 a.m. eastern time Thursday.

Taylor Ranches up for National Environmental Stewardship Award

Among the finalists for the title is Taylor Ranches a family run cow-calf operation on the Milk River Ridge southwest of Warner, Alberta.

Robert Taylor says he and his family operate an 800 head commercial black angus herd with a focus on wildlife management and habitat.

Strong yields expected for Southern Alberta farms

It's that time of year again to keep an eye out for combines in fields and on roads.

Despite the concerns of drought this year, late spring rains, and hot days, crop yields in Alberta are doing well.

Even though it is early in the harvest season, the crop reports in Alberta show that both the Peace Region and the South Region, which includes Foothills County, are currently expecting to produce above-average yields, while the Northwest region is on par with the last five-year averages.

Business groups call on federal government to prevent rail work stoppage

A coalition of business groups is calling on the federal government to prevent a work stoppage at Canada's two biggest railways.

A phased shutdown of the networks at Canadian National Railway Co. and Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd. is already underway as the clock ticks down on contract talks with the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference.

Unless deals are reached, rail service at both companies is poised to stop at 12:01 a.m. ET on Thursday.

Foothills students among those chosen for Ministers Youth Council

Three students from the Foothills area get to voice their opinions on Alberta's education system for the upcoming school year.

Kamea Jr. Lafontaine from the Christ the Redeemer Catholic Separate School Division, Jennifer Doerksen from the Livingstone School Division, and Mina Soliman from Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School are among the 40 students selected for the Ministers Youth Council for this year.

The three will have an opportunity to engage directly with the Minister of Education and other government officials to share their views on the education system.
