Due to the amount of wildfire smoke in the air, very poor air quality and reduced visibility can be expected.

The air quality and visibility due to wildfire smoke is able to fluctuate over short distances, as well as from hour to hour.

Local firefighters enroute to help with wildfires in Jasper

Some local firefighters are on their way to help with forest fires near Jasper.

Six members and two trucks from the Diamond Valley Fire Department headed up Wednesday night, according to their Facebook post.

High River's Fire Department also sent up some firefighters last night.

Fire Chief Cody Zebedee says they were able to help out and send up some support last night too.

Jasper wildfire burns buildings, while poor air quality forces some fire crews out

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on social media that Ottawa has approved Alberta’s request for federal assistance after a fast-moving wildfire hit Jasper National Park and its townsite late Wednesday.

The park's social media account says the fire has caused significant loss within the townsite, but the specific locations or neighbourhoods affected are not being reported.

On the social media platform X, the account for Fairmont's Jasper Park Lodge says the flames have reached the hotel's grounds, but the extent of damage, if any, is not yet known.

Pair of bears pay a visit to local golf course

Kananaskis Country isn't the only region to have had some recent bear sightings.

A recent post from the Heritage Pointe Golf Club notified residents of the community that multiple sightings of a bear cub at the golf course had been reported.

The post included a photo of what appears to be a bear cub on the green.

A video recorded in the community on July 21 showing a cub running into a wooded area also circulated on Facebook.

RCMP warns of scammers posing as Fortis employees

The Town of Nanton and FortisAlberta are cautioning people of a possible scam.

A Facebook post from Fortis says the RCMP notified them of a person going door-to-door posing as a Fortis employee offering solar services.

The person has been showing a FortisAlberta badge and asking to see homeowners' power bills and meters.

According to Fortis, they do not offer solar services and very rarely approach customers at their front door.

Art Brochu began a province-wide cycling expedition in Fort McMurray on June 10th and arrived in High River on Wednesday to visit the Cancer Centre in the local hospital. 

The Chucks are back as the Battle of the Foothills kicks off tonight

The Chuckwagons are back and ready to fly down the track at the High River Ag grounds starting tonight.

The Battle of the Foothills has returned for the next four days with High River's Jason Glass looking in top form.

"Yeah, we start in heat 8. Four wagons, a little more excitement going on out there on the track. I expect we'll get great crowds with the weather we've been getting and put on a hell of a show" says Glass.

Dawgs sweep Beavers in back-to-back games

The Okotoks Dawgs had more bite than the Beavers in Weyburn on Wednesday night, winning 9-3 and sweeping the two-game season series.

Trent Wastler started on the mound and punched out two Beaver batters with strikeouts. Cam Stephens, Chase Tucker, Zane Morrison, and Greg Ross came in as relievers.

The 2024 WCBL All-Star Chase Tucker would get credit for the win while only allowing one hit while on the mound.

Grain Growers of Canada Summer Tour brings MP's out to the farm

The Grain Growers of Canada executive director Kyle Larkin has been on the road this week driving from Winnipeg to Calgary as part of the GGC's Summer Tour.

The tour kicked off on Monday, when he visited Doug Martin's farm at East Selkirk, Manitoba with MP Kevin Lamoureux.

"We discussed a number of issues, including the Capital Gains Tax increase, the carbon tax, potential rail strike. You know, there's a lot of issues out there right now impacting grain farmers and we're just here to raise awareness of them over the summer."
