Oilers split back-to-back games against new division rival
The Okotoks Oilers were able to pick up their first win of the 2024-2025 BCHL regular season on Saturday night, with an 8-5 beating on the Cranbrook Bucks.
Their first time facing off in a regular season game came on Friday with the Bucks hosting the Oilers at Western Financial Place, the same arena the former Kootenay Ice of the WHL used to play in.
The Flyers will put the weekend in the rear-view mirror
The High River Flyers will likely want to put this past weekend in the rearview mirror as it wasn't their best showing.
On Friday (Sept. 27) they visited Medicine Hat to face the Cubs and will want to forget about the game as they fell 10-1. Aidan Schopf would get the lone goal for the Flyers with Eastan Robert and Jonah Thomas getting the assists. High River was outshot 49-22 in the game.

The Strike at the Port of Vancouver may be over, but we could see more disruptions to Canada's Supply Chain.
Late Friday, the Grain Workers Union Local 333 agreed to a tentative four-year deal with the Vancouver Terminal Elevator Association taking them through December 31, 2027.
The four-day strike involved over 600 workers at the six bulk grain export terminals at the Port owned by Viterra and Richardson International, G3, Cargill and Alliance Grain.
Western Grain Elevators Association noted that workers were back on the job Saturday morning.
The southern prairies are going to be windswept today
Parts of Southern Alberta are going to be windy today (Oct 1), but Foothills County won't be too bad.
Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Stephen Berg says that Okotoks won't get a wind warning today.
"Generally, Okotoks area will be gusting to about 50, maybe 60 km/hr for this afternoon," Berg explains. "Stavely, kind of towards the southwest, had a gust of about 72 km/hr, but that's a bit of an outlier as it kind of becomes more gusty towards the southwest, especially at higher elevations."
Town of High River to celebrate D.E.A.M. for the month of October
At their September 23 meeting, High River Town Council signed a proclamation to officially recognize the month of October as Disability Employment Awareness Month (D.E.A.M).
The Town of High River will help raise awareness for D.E.A.M. by lighting up the town hall red on Tuesday evening (Oct. 1).
Minimum wage in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario, P.E.I. increases
The minimum wage in four provinces is going up today.
Saskatchewan's minimum wage is going up by a dollar to $15, but it will still be the lowest in Canada, along with Alberta.
In Manitoba, the rate is going up by 50 cents to $15.80, a hike that follows a formula set in provincial law tied to the rate of inflation of the previous calendar year.
The rate in Ontario is rising by 65 cents to $17.20 an hour, an increase tied to inflation.
Canadian MPs join Australian, New Zealand peers in pushing for Palestine statehood
Canadian members of Parliament are working with their colleagues in Australia and New Zealand to try and convince their respective governments to jointly recognize Palestinian statehood.
NDP MP Heather McPherson, who is leading an effort to recruit Canadian MPs, said building on work the three governments have already done might be the best leverage to advance a two-state solution.
Sunny days aplenty in Foothills County
Foothills County is home to some of the sunniest places in Canada.
On Tuesday (Sept. 24), Environment and Climate Change Canada posted an infographic showcasing the top 10 sunniest cities in Canada, with Calgary ranking fourth.
Month and half long road closure is coming to Foothills County
A bridge in Foothills County will be replaced, causing a road to be closed for over a month.
The Foothills Public Works Department will be closing 64 Street West between 226th Ave West and 242 Ave so a bridge can be replaced.
The road closure will occur from September 30 to November 15, but there will be detours in place and there will be local access-only signs posted where needed.
Foothills County is asking people to use 226 Ave West, 80 St West, and 242 Ave West as alternative routes.
