Terriers hoping to get back on track against Steinbach

Stride Place will be taken over by the two best teams in the MJHL tonight. The Portage Terriers are back on home ice as they welcome the Steinbach Pistons to town for what will be the fifth meeting between these two squads this season. 

The Terriers currently lead the season series 3-1 and will only play the Pistons one more time, which will be the last game of the regular season.

Portage has a two-point lead on Steinbach in the standings and has come away with victories over the Pistons in three consecutive meetings.

École Crescentview School is trying to integrate some of its recently immigrated students into the Portage la Prairie lifestyle. 

Principal Tracey Vanstone says their Home & School Association has been coming up with ways to engage families, and last Friday, their focus was on some of those families from different parts of the world.

Terriers looking to tie longest win streak of the season

The Portage Terriers are looking to take sole possession of first place in the MJHL standings tonight. The Dogs are tied with the Steinbach Pistons for the top spot for the first time since November. 

Portage currently holds the tiebreaker over the Pistons as they are 3-1 in the season series thus far, and the Dogs also have three extra games to play. 

Terriers on a roll - take close one in Winkler

The Portage Terriers grabbed their seventh win in a row Wednesday night beating the Winkler Flyers 4-3. With the win, the Dogs move into a tie with Steinbach for first place, plus they have three games in hand. The Pistons lost to the Winnipeg Blues 4-1.

It was a tight-checking back-and-forth first period. Midway through the frame Terrier forward Mike Stubbs tipped a Kian Calder point shot over the shoulder of Malachi Klassen to open the scoring. Portage hung on to the 1-0 lead into the intermission. 

Terriers to be represented well at MJHL/SJHL Showcase

The Portage Terriers are sending nine players to the MJHL/SJHL Showcase in Winnipeg at the end of the month.

The event will see the best prospects from the two leagues be split into teams to put their best skate forward in front of scouts from leagues like the WHL, NCAA, USPORTS, and even the NHL.

There will be two U18 squads, one with MJHL players and the other with SJHL players, and four U20 teams, two teams from each league. 

New acquisitions thrilled to play in Portage

The Manitoba Junior Hockey League's trade deadline took place on Monday, and the Portage Terriers brought in two forwards before finalizing their roster. 

Brock MacDonald and Mike Stubbs will be playing in their third game as a Terrier tonight in Winnipeg. Stubbs played a full season in the OHL last year but was very happy to hear he was going to land in Portage.

Terriers fend off Titans for fifth straight win

The Portage Terriers remain undefeated in 2023. The Dogs picked up their fifth consecutive victory tonight against the Neepawa Titans, by a score of 4-3.

The Terriers opened the scoring on the power-play early in the first period. Defenceman Brandon McCartney found the back of the net for the fourth time this season, with Austin McLean given credit for the assist.

Past the halfway point in the first, Kaden Kohle brought the puck into the offensive zone along the wing. He ripped a sharp-angle shot on the short side and beat Mason Lobreau to bring the lead up to 2-0.

Siso returns after nearly two months on the sideline

The Portage Terriers have bolstered their lineup, not only by making a few trades, but also by having one of their more prominent players return to action. Forward Daniel Siso played his first game since November 22 on Wednesday night against the Virden Oil Capitals.

The 19-year-old led the Terriers in goals last year and was second in points. Siso is currently averaging over a point per game when he's been on the ice this season. He says it was great to finally be back.

Terriers remain undefeated in the new year

The Portage Terriers continue to roll in 2023. The Dogs defeated the Virden Oil Capitals 5-2 on home ice tonight to improve their win streak to four games.

The Terriers struck first, just past the midway point of the first period. Noah Wagner took a sharp-angle shot that was stopped but the rebound went right to the slot for Kaden Kohle, who was absolutely robbed by a regrouping Eric Reid. The Oil Capitals tried to clear and give Reid a moment to recover as he had lost his stick but Parker Scherr kept the puck in the zone and fired the puck into the back of the net. 1-0 Portage.
