Hockey Manitoba supports call for leadership change at Hockey Canada

Hockey Manitoba says it supports the call by Members of Parliament for a change in Hockey Canada's leadership.

Hockey Canada continues to vigorously defend its leadership amid criticism over the handling of alleged sexual assaults and the way money was paid out in lawsuits. The revelations include an admission by Hockey Canada that it drew on minor hockey membership fees to pay for uninsured liabilities, including sexual abuse claims.

Canadians not vaccinated against COVID-19 can now re-enter the country without being tested or being required to quarantine upon their return.

Wayne Anderson is Reeve for the Rural Municipality of Piney. He says he is very glad that border restrictions have lifted.

"The border closures were unnecessary in my opinion, and I don't know why they did that," says Anderson. "That was just terrible."

Workers at Mennonite Centre in Ukraine facing uncertainty as Russia announces annexation

The former Mayor of Steinbach says his thoughts are with the people in Ukraine. 

Chris Goertzen made that comment following news that Russia plans to annex parts of Ukraine. The four regions set to be annexed include Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. Goertzen was Mayor when Steinbach and Zaporizhzhia were named twin cities back in 2018. 

The Mennonite Centre in Ukraine falls within one of the areas said to be annexed. Goertzen says right now the people there are faced with a lot of uncertainty.

Travellers relieved by lifting of border restrictions

That is how Deborah Schroeder, owner of South East Travel in Steinbach is reacting to news out of Ottawa this week that the last of Canada's COVID-19 border restrictions will expire first thing Saturday morning. A cabinet order affecting mandatory vaccinations, testing and quarantine of international travellers will expire September 30th. That expiry also spells the end of insisting travellers use the ArriveCAN app to input their vaccine status and test results, though the app will live on as an optional tool for customs and immigration.
