Faith in Fiddles: Baroque specialists perform some magnificent chamber music this Saturday night.

This Saturday night, April 20 at 7:00 p.m. at All Saints Anglican Church, the Winnipeg Baroque Festival will be presenting the seventh concert in what has been so far an amazing week of performances.

Called Fidem in Fidibus or Faith in Fiddles, this concert will showcase Baroque chamber music from 17th-century Italy, Austria, and Germany.

Pianist Jammie Lee wins tenth biennial WMC McLellan Competition

It was a thrilling evening of music at Jubilee Place Auditorium. 

Three decidedly different finalists -- cellist Sam Nadurak, soprano Christina Thanisch-Smith, and pianist Jammie Lee -- performed alongside the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra under the baton of maestro Julian Pellicano in the final round of the prestigious WMC McLellan Competition for Solo Performance. 

After a lengthy deliberation, the judges awarded the $10,000 top prize to pianist Jammie Lee for his performance of the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini by Rachmaninoff.

The Winnipeg Baroque Festival opened its run last Sunday with a pair of choral concerts.  

After a brief pause, the early music offerings are set to ramp up again with 7 concerts happening over the next four days, including one featuring a solo artist: violinist Karl Stobbe.  

 

MCO gives World Premiere of a Cello Concerto by Ted Runcie featuring cellist Desiree Abbey

On Wednesday, April 17th at 7:30 at The Crescent Arts Centre, the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra will be presenting their eighth concert of their 2023-24 season.

Featuring music of Schubert, the wonderful Latvian composer Peteris Vasks, and the Canadian-Jamaican composer Ted Runcie, the MCO will be led by all-star Canadian conductor Jean Marie-Zeitouni.

One of the highlights of the concert is that the MCO will give the world premiere performance of a Cello Concertino by composer Ted Runcie for the Principal Cellist of MCO Desiree Abbey

Meet the McLellan Finalists: pianist Jammie Lee

The biennial WMC McLellan Competition provides emerging Manitoba-born or Manitoba-educated musicians the unique opportunity to perform alongside the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and compete for $20,000 in career funding.  

Presented by the Women’s Musical club of Winnipeg, the final round takes place at Jubilee Place Auditorium on Thursday, April 18.

This past Sunday, April 14th, the 3rd annual Winnipeg Baroque Festival kicked off. Founded in 2022 this momentous festival has proven to be a highlight of the month of April and the spring season. It has truly proven to be a glorious way to fanfare in the warm Winnipeg Spring weather.

Meet the McLellan finalists: cellist Sam Nadurak

This week, the Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg welcomes three finalists to perform alongside the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in the WMC McLellan Competition for Solo Performance.  

The prestigious competition awards a total $20,000 in prize monies, providing career funding and performance opportunities to Manitoba-born and Manitoba-educated musicians.  

 

My Cup Runneth Over…with the music of Bach: 4th Annual Bach Marathon happens this Saturday

Right now we are currently in the midst of the third annual Winnipeg Baroque Festival.  The festival started this past Sunday with Dead of Winter and All The King’s Men performing two amazing concerts.

One of the concerts that has become a crown jewel in the Winnipeg Baroque festival is the Annual Bach Marathon Concert that is hosted by the Royal Canadian College of Organists.

This Saturday at 1:00pm at Young United Church, the College will welcome literally dozens of musicians to the stage to perform and let audience members revel in the music of Bach.

‘A certain genius’ in the opera ‘Carmen’: soloists Daniel Okulitch and Lara Secord-Haid

Manitoba Opera’s “Carmen” production opened over the weekend to a nearly packed Centennial Concert Hall.  

Post-performance reviews were glowing, with the production enthusiastically reviewed by experienced opera goers and newcomers alike, according to Lara Secord-Haid.  

“Just hearing people come up afterwards and say, ‘this was my first opera and I’m definitely coming back,’” she recounts. “It’s just the warmest feeling in the world.”
