2024/25 WSO season announced
The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra announced their upcoming season at this past weekend's Stravinsky's Firebird concert on Saturday night.
Featuring a celebrated cast of guest soloists – including return and debut performers – classic concert offerings take place on Saturdays, Thursdays and, new this upcoming season, Sunday afternoons.
Titan of the Piano: Maurizio Pollini has died
Italian Grammy-winning piano giant Maurizio Pollini has died at the age of 82.
The announcement of his death was made by La Scala a theatre Pollini performed at regularly. There is no specific cause of death, but in 2022 Pollini was forced to cancel concerts at the Salzburg Festival due to heart problems.
Karl Stobbe in studio: unique relationship between violin and violinists explored on new disc
Karl Stobbe is a violinist who needs little introduction in these parts. Concertmaster of the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, Associate Concertmaster of the Winnipeg Symphony, he is one of the nation’s most accomplished violinists and a lover of all things pertaining to the instrument.
His latest disc, Ysaye, J.S. Bach & Paganini: Works for Solo Violin, released on the Leaf Music label, highlights not only his outstanding playing, but also his admiration and fascination with the craft of luthiers.

In their penultimate Saturday Classics concert coming up this weekend, the WSO welcomes award-winning American pianist Michelle Cann to perform Liszt’s Piano Concerto no. 1 in addition to Florence Price’s Concerto in One Movement, bookended by Weber’s Overture to Oberon and Stravinsky’s Suite from The Firebird.

Featuring Aaron Hutton alongside pianist Danny Carroll, A Tribute to Tony Bennett honours the great crooner who died in July of 2023.

On Monday, March 18th, it will be Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s 180th birthday. Tune in at 1:00pm as we celebrate his life and music.

Rimsky-Korsakov came from a long line of family members who were officers in the Russian Navy. In 1858 at the age of 14 he entered the Naval Cadet College in St. Petersburg, with the idea being that he himself would become an officer.
