Mint to launch coin commemorating legendary jazz pianist Oscar Peterson

The Royal Canadian Mint is launching a special coin celebrating late music legend Oscar Peterson.

The one-dollar circulation coin is set to be unveiled at a Toronto event this morning.

Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland is expected to be in attendance alongside the jazz pianist's widow, Kelly Peterson, and daughter, Céline Peterson.

Pianist and composer Thompson Egbo-Egbo will pay tribute to Peterson with a special performance.

Cirque returns to Winnipeg with creepy crawlers

Cirque du Soleil is coming back to Winnipeg with a revamped version of their performance called OVO.

The circus company was first created in 1984 in Canada by street performers who aimed to reinvent what the circus was. Not using animals in their shows is what made this company stand out, it focuses on the abilities of the human body rather than an animal's.

Canadian in mix as 6 finalists named for prestigious piano competition

The Jury of the 20th Santander International Piano Competition is revealing the six finalists of the Competition, one of them being a 22-year-old Canadian.

From July 29 to August 1, the fourth of the Semi-final recital sessions at the Palacio de Festivales de Cantabria's Sala Pereda finished and six participants were unveiled. One of them being Jaeden Izik-Dzurko from Salmon Arm, British Columbia.

Royal Winnipeg Ballet celebrates 50th anniversary in the park

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) is performing at the Lyric Theatre in Assiniboine Park today with unique performances to highlight its 50th anniversary of Ballet in the Park.

This is the RWB's 83rd season and it is beginning with dance performances from the Company, the Professional Division of the RWB School and the Recreational Division of the school as well.

The passing of maestro Bramwell Tovey

British conductor and composer Bramwell Tovey, OC OM has died at the age of 69. 

Named "one of the most versatile and charismatic musicians in the world" by MusicalAmerica.com, Tovey most recently served as the Principal Conductor of the B.B.C. Concert Orchestra, based in London, U.K. While also working as the Artistic Advisor of the Rhode Island Philharmonic.

Serving up opera… by the pint!

Opera is back on tap at Little Brown Jug Brewing Company. 

Flipside Opera and Art Song Collective’s Opera by the Pint returns for its fourth season on Wednesday, July 6. 

“It’s always such a popular event,” says Flipside’s Lisa Rumpel, crediting the outstanding — and always changing — singers who perform, the vast amount of repertoire to choose from,  and the casual atmosphere of the brew hall and outdoor patio.
