The Portage Padres season is underway, and a couple of young men are making an impact on the squad.

Carson Dubois and Kade Maryniuk are both on the diamond, with Maryniuk handling some of the pitching duties, and Dubois adding a home run to his hitting totals so far. 

As wildfires rage across Manitoba, local fire departments are stepping in to support the response while bracing for challenges at home.

Carberry crew deployed to Flin Flon

On Wednesday night, four members of the Carberry North Cypress-Langford Fire Department, along with an apparatus, headed north to assist with fire suppression and property protection near Flin Flon.

“We are happy to help when called upon,” the department shares in a social media update.

As more motorcycles hit the roads, safety advocates are reminding Portage la Prairie drivers that, whether they are behind the wheel or on two wheels, staying safe on the road is a shared responsibility. 

Tara Seel, media and public relations lead for Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI), says May is a critical time to talk about the risks riders face while on the road. 

For the first time since 1977, Canada heard a speech from the throne delivered by King Charles III, marking a historic moment in Canadian political tradition. While the ceremony drew on decades of royal ties and national symbolism, Conservative MP Branden Leslie of Portage–Lisgar says the moment must be matched with action and not just sentiment.

Speaking after the speech, Leslie acknowledged the importance of Canada's constitutional monarchy and the symbolism of unity it brings.

The Manitoba government is rolling out a new compulsory Grade 9 math curriculum aimed at improving student performance and embedding financial literacy into the classroom, and the Portage la Prairie School Division is on board.

Superintendent Pam Garnham says students will benefit from learning real-life money skills at a younger age.

The community of Portage la Prairie has a new reason to get outdoors and get moving. This Saturday, the Junk Yard Dogs Cycling Club celebrates the grand opening of their long-awaited activity park, a vibrant network of trails and features designed to welcome cyclists, walkers, and outdoor enthusiasts of all ages, accessibility and skill levels.
