Nomination deadline approaches for King's Coronation Medal honouring community contributions

We've seen the Queen's Jubilee Medal program celebrate Queen Elizabeth's 50 years as monarch, followed by the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Medal commemorating 75 years on the throne. A medal is forged for each significant milestone of the monarchy in Canada, and the next is the King's Coronation Medal.

Portage-Lisgar MP Branden Leslie says the medals haven't been delivered yet, but 20 have been allocated to his office for the region’s representation.

Missing Selkirk man located safely, RCMP announce

RCMP have announced that Lionel Leveque has been safely found.

On Friday, October 25, at around 8:00 a.m., Selkirk RCMP received a report of a missing 40-year-old man.

Lionel Leveque was last seen on October 24, in Selkirk, but hasn’t been heard from or seen since.

The RCMP are concerned for his safety and wellbeing.

Lionel is approximately 6’2”, 180 pounds, with black hair. He was last seen wearing a black or grey winter jacket, dark blue jeans, and may be heading to Winnipeg.

Manitoba Premier shares powerful Biblical reflection from Prairie Green Landfill visit

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew is sharing an experience he had during a recent visit to the Prairie Green Landfill in hopes of offering a new perspective on the search currently underway at the facility, located northwest of Winnipeg, for the remains of Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran, the missing women believed to be buried there.

Accompanied by the womens' families, who also brought with them their spiritual supports, one of which was a Christian pastor, Kinew says the moment happened on their way back down the hill.

Grade 7 students at La Verendrye School unite for orca awareness through fundraising efforts

Grade 7 students at La Verendrye School (LVS) are diving deep into the world of orcas through a unique inquiry project aimed at raising awareness and funds for endangered species. Led by Grade 7 teacher Camille Sanderson, the project emphasizes not only the scientific knowledge but also the cultural significance of orcas in Indigenous traditions.

Each class at LVS has been assigned an animal to study, and Sanderson's students have embraced the orca as their focus.

Rotary duck pond rejuvenation project nearly complete

The Rotary Club of Portage la Prairie can almost cross a large project off their to-do list.

The duck pond at Island Park is almost complete, following the installation of some concrete bump-outs around the water. P.R. Director Preston Meier says the four-phase project started back in 2019.

"It had been a while since the club had done a major project," explains Meier. "We really envisioned taking the duck pond that was there for the last 100 years and trying to make it a special spot. We were able to meet with the City and develop a plan over four years."

Terriers take down Freeze in extra frame

The Portage Terriers and Winnipeg Freeze battled it out in a tighter game than most were expecting, with Portage coming out on top 2-1 in overtime. The Terriers came into the game winners of four straight, while the Freeze have only won one game this season.

A quiet first period saw just one entry found the scoresheet. Jacob Michelson would take a cross-checking penalty with 38 seconds remaining in the frame, which the Freeze would not get an opportunity to set up, thanks to a couple nifty clears from Owen Witt.

La Verendrye pass, sets, and crushes the competition in annual tournament

The annual Pass, Set, Crush Volleyball Tournament held at La Verendrye School (LVS) recently concluded with an exciting victory for the boy's team from LVS. This year's event saw both boy's and girl's teams competing fiercely, with the boys unexpectedly clinching the championship title.

Mitch Nelissen, one of the coaches, and LVS Phys'Ed teacher expressed surprise at the boys' triumph. 

"We weren’t expecting to win, but the team came together and played exceptionally well."
