Key funding announcement for Saskatchewan's Ag sector

The Minister of Emergency Management and Community Resilience and Minister responsible for Prairies Economic Development Eleanor Olszewski was in Saskatchewan earlier this week for two key announcements, including $4.2 million for the province's ag sector. 

"By building on Saskatchewan’s many strengths and investing in them, we’re helping create good jobs and grow one strong Canadian economy."

Alberta's Crop Diversification Centres will see upgrades

This week, Alberta farmers learned more about the $5.2 million in funding planned for the province's two crop diversification centres.

Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation RJ Sigurdson says the province's farmers directly benefit from the work being done at CDC North near Edmonton, and CDC South near Brooks.

The funding supports upgrades and replacements to greenhouses, labs, and administrative buildings at both sites, as well as research essentials such as seed, fertilizer, and pesticides.  

Alberta Beef Producers to withdraw from the Canadian Cattle Association

Alberta Beef Producers have decided to withdraw from the Canadian Cattle Association.

Board Chair Doug Roxburgh says they've been talking with the organization about their concerns for years regarding governance and fiscal transparency.

He notes over the past five years there's been some discussion going on around the move, noting the final decision came following extensive deliberation and strategic review.

Cairns looks back on first junior golf title

The Portage Golf Club has crowned its 2025 champions, with 16-year-old Logan Cairns capturing his first Junior Boys title after a competitive weekend on the course.

Cairns says he went into the event with a solid shot at the win, knowing his main competition would be familiar faces.

The Portage junior field may be small, but it’s tight-knit. Cairns notes that being friends doesn’t dull the competitive edge.

National plaques unveiled at Former Portage la Prairie Indian Residential School

The Former Portage la Prairie Indian Residential School has been officially recognized as a site of national historic significance, decades after it closed in 1975.

On Thursday, the Government of Canada and Long Plain First Nation unveiled three commemorative plaques at the National Indigenous Residential School Museum of Canada, located on the Keeshkeemaquah Reserve.

The ceremony drew survivors, community leaders, and government officials to honour the experiences of children who attended the school and to mark the ongoing importance of education and remembrance.

Pirates stay alive, force Game 5 in SCBL final

The Plumas Pirates are still breathing in the Santa Clara Baseball League final.

After falling behind in the series, Plumas came out firing in Game 4 on Thursday night, building an 8-1 lead over the Portage Padres through four innings. Portage battled back with five unanswered runs to make it 8-6, but the Pirates added an insurance run and held on for a 9-6 win.

Wildfires in Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia have residents on high alert

Thousands are out of their homes, and many more are on alert to evacuate as wildfires continue to rage across Atlantic Canada.

Officials in Newfoundland and Labrador have expanded an evacuation alert along the Bay De Verde Peninsula as the Kingston wildfire burns nearby.

The community of Job's Cove in Newfoundland is affected by the expanded evacuation alert for the wildfire, which is considered out-of-control and is now more than 90 square kilometres in size.

The Kingston fire is the largest in the province and has forced more than 3,000 people from their homes.
