Heather Stefanson says she is stepping down as leader of Manitoba's Progressive Conservative Party after the NDP won the provincial election.

Stefanson replaced former premier Brian Pallister as leader of the Conservative Party, and became the first woman premier in Manitoba's history.

She was first elected to the Manitoba legislature in a 2000 by-election, replacing former Progressive Conservative Premier Gary Filmon in the south Winnipeg riding of Tuxedo.

The first First Nations premier of a province in Canada has been elected in Manitoba, with the New Democrats under Leader Wab Kinew taking seats in the key battleground of Winnipeg.

The provincial capital holds 32 of the 57 legislature seats and the NDP flipped seats that had been held by Progressive Conservative cabinet members.

Kinew's late father was not allowed to vote as a young man under Canadian law at the time. Kinew was re-elected as the legislature member for Fort Rouge in Winnipeg.

Canada needs diplomats in India to help navigate the "extremely challenging" tensions between the two countries, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday in response to demands that Ottawa repatriate dozens of its envoys. 

India reportedly wants 41 of 62 Canadian diplomats out of the country by early next week — a striking, if largely anticipated, deepening of the rift that erupted last month following Trudeau's explosive allegations in the House of Commons. 

The Conservatives have maintained their summer lead in the polls, according to fresh numbers from Leger.

Leger has released the findings of an online survey conducted over the weekend with more than 1,600 Canadian respondents.

Among decided voters, Tory Leader Pierre Poilievre's party has the support of 39 per cent of respondents, which is 12 points ahead of the federal Liberals.

The resignation of House of Commons Speaker Anthony Rota is set to take effect this evening. 

Rota resigned on Tuesday amid international controversy after he invited a man who fought for the Nazis to attend a speech by the Ukrainian president last Friday. 

He said he profoundly regrets calling attention to 98-year-old Yaroslav Hunka, a veteran of a Ukrainian voluntary unit that was under the command of the Nazis in the Second World War.

House of Commons Speaker Anthony Rota is resigning after he invited a man who fought for the Nazis to attend a speech that Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered to Canada's Parliament last week.

The Liberal MP, who was first elected Speaker in December 2019, shared his decision ahead of question period in the House of Commons today, referring to his time in the role as "his greatest honour."

Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Ottawa late Thursday night for his first official visit to Canada since Russia launched a full-scale invasion in February 2022. 

The Ukrainian president and his wife, Olena Zelenska, arrived in a plane adorned with the Ukrainian flag, and the plane's crew placed the blue-and-yellow flag outside the window of the cockpit upon landing.

The pair were greeted on the tarmac by a small delegation that included Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland and Ukraine’s ambassador to Canada, Yuliya Kovaliv. 

The federal government has tasked Food Banks Canada with handing out free menstrual products to members of marginalized low-income communities. 

Gender Equality Minister Marci Ien announced the $17.9-million pilot project Thursday at the Allan Gardens Food Bank in Toronto.

"This is about making sure that Canadians don't have to choose between buying menstrual products and paying for essentials," Ien said. 

A new StatCan report says one in four adolescents in Canada have been cyberbullied and it's taking a toll on their mental health. 

The study says youth who have been victimized online have a greater risk of depression, anxiety, eating disorder symptoms and thoughts of suicide or suicide attempts. 

The report says transgender and non-binary youth, as well as females attracted to other females, are at higher risk of being victimized online.
