A search is underway off the coast of Newfoundland for a small submersible reported missing near the wreck of the Titanic.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax says a research submarine was reported overdue around 9:13 p.m. Sunday, about 700 kilometres south of St. John’s, N.L.

Lt.-Cmdr. Len Hickey says an Aurora military aircraft and the Canadian Coast Guard vessel Kopit Hopson are assisting the search effort, which is being led by the U.S. Coast Guard in Boston.

RCMP say 15 people are dead and 10 are injured after a bus carrying seniors to a casino crashed with a semi truck on the Trans-Canada Highway near Carberry, Man., on Thursday morning.

At a news conference, RCMP say dashcam video shows the bus pulled into the highway lane where the transport truck had the right-of-way.

They say further tests need to be done on the truck and the bus before responsibility can be determined.

Canada's population has reached more than 40 million, Statistics Canada said. 

The milestone comes amid a wave of new immigrants as part of Ottawa's promise to bring in 500,000 people a year by 2025. 

The 40-million mark came faster than expected, Statistics Canada said, as the country added 1.1 million people in 2022, most of them permanent and temporary immigrants. 

That's more than twice the federal government's plan to welcome more than 430,000 new permanent residents last year. 

Manitoba’s health authority says six patients are in critical condition a day after a highway crash between a semi−truck and minibus killed 15 people.

Another four patients are being cared for in a surgical unit.

Police have said a group of mostly seniors from Dauphin, Manitoba and the surrounding area were heading to a casino when the fiery crash happened near the town of Carberry, west of Winnipeg. 

Rescue crews encountered a horrific scene of bodies on the road.

Canada is experiencing its worst wildfire season of the 21st century.

Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair announced the grim milestone Monday, saying more than 47,000 square kilometres have burned so far this year, with 431 wildfires currently burning across Canada. 

One of those continues to threaten the Alberta community of Edson, where 8,400 residents remain under an evacuation order issued Friday.

Central Alberta wildfires continue to grow

An official in Yellowhead County west of Edmonton says wildfires threatening the area continued to grow overnight but got no closer to evacuated communities.

That includes the town of Edson, Alta., where about 8,400 people were ordered to leave late Friday.

A wildfire that has damaged or destroyed dozens of homes in suburban Halifax is still burning out of control because of gusty winds and dry conditions.

Halifax deputy fire Chief David Meldrum says an estimated 14,000 people were forced to flee their homes after the rapidly spreading fire broke out Sunday afternoon in Tantallon, a 30-minute drive northwest of downtown Halifax.

A Florida man pleaded not guilty to human smuggling charges Friday in a case linked to the discovery last year of a family of four migrants from India found frozen to death just steps from the Canada-U.S. border. 

Steve Shand, 48, waived the reading of the indictment before entering the plea via videoconference as part of a brief but long-awaited arraignment in Duluth, Minn.

The WestJet Group says it's ramping up operations as quickly as possible after reaching a last-minute deal with the airline's pilots to avert a strike.

However, it warns that the full resumption of operations will take time and encouraged travellers to continue to check the status of their flight before heading to the airport.

WestJet and the Air Line Pilots Association announced a tentative agreement to avoid the job action early Friday morning.
