A major winter storm bearing down on Toronto is adding to the calamity in Canadian airports already plagued by flight cancellations and delays set off early this week by heavy snow in Vancouver. 

Environment Canada says Toronto's storm will begin today with rain or snow followed by plummeting temperatures, a potential flash freeze and blizzard-like conditions Friday.

Toronto's Pearson International Airport has cautioned it could affect operations, while Environment Canada warns of possible extensive power outages and dangerous travel conditions.

Nearly $700,000 was spent repairing vandalism to Winnipeg bus shelters over 15 months as city and community leaders urge more support for an unhoused population that has exploded during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Data obtained by The Canadian Press through freedom-of-information requests shows that from June 1, 2021, to Aug. 31, 2022, the estimated damage to bus shelters was $699,000.

About $6,256 in damage-related work orders was due to snowplows or other claims from Manitoba Public Insurance and the rest was from vandalism. 

Police north of Toronto are working to determine the motive in what they've called a "horrendous" shooting at a condo that left five people, plus the suspected gunman, dead.

York Regional Police say Francesco Villi's victims at the high-rise building in Vaughan, Ont., on Sunday night included three members of the building's condo board.

Court documents indicate the 73-year-old had a lengthy history of threatening members of the board and believed they had a conspiracy to "systematically murder" him.

Reid Carruthers' curling team and vice-skip Jason Gunnlaugson have split up.

The Manitoba team called the separation "a mutual parting of the ways" and said a search was underway for a replacement in a Twitter post Monday.

Carruthers, Gunnalugson and front-end players Derek Samagalski and Connor Njegovan formed a team in April.

Carruthers of Winnipeg is ranked ninth in the world in men's curling by the World Curling Federation.

His team won $50,000 in the inaugural PointsBet Invitational in September.

A lone gunman opened fire and killed five people at a Toronto-area condo building on Sunday evening before he himself was shot by police, the regional force's chief said. 

Jim MacSween, head of the York Regional Police Force, offered few details in the hours immediately following the shooting in Vaughan, Ont. But in a hastily called news conference outside the building, he said police immediately realized a complex situation was unfolding. 

"Once the officers arrived they were met with a horrendous scene," he said. "Numerous victims were deceased."

After several months on the run, four cows from a herd of runaway cattle were captured on Saturday night in St-Sévère, Que. 

The regional chapter of the Union des producteurs agricoles says the cows were transported back to their original farm on Sunday morning. 

Specialists examined the cows after their capture and confirmed the animals were in good shape. 

The union says weather conditions over the last few days prevented the entire herd from being captured, so another operation will take place soon to catch seven or eight animals that remain at large. 

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed linebacker Kyrie Wilson to a one-year contract extension. 

Wilson returns for his sixth season in Winnipeg after his 2022 campaign was cut short when he sustained an Achilles injury in a Week 4 win over Toronto. 

He had 17 defensive tackles, one special-teams tackle and a sack before the injury.

Wilson’s best season statistically came in 2019, when he started all 18 games and finished third on the club in defensive plays. 

Vladislav Shilo had a goal and an assist as the Winnipeg Ice snapped the Regina Pats' four-game win streak with a 6-1 victory on Sunday.

Graham Sward, Skyler Bruce, Evan Friesen, Aiden Oiring and Owen Pederson also scored for Winnipeg (25-4-0), which won its third straight. Daniel Hauser made 19 saves.

Tanner Howe replied for Regina (16-13-1-1). Kelton Pyne stopped 34 shots.

The Ice got going early with Oiring opening the scoring 1:58 into the game and Winnipeg went on to take a 4-0 lead 8:28 into the second period. 

Police say an inmate from a Manitoba jail who escaped during a medical escort assaulted three guards, pushed a motorist out of the driver's seat and then smashed a vehicle into six others during 17 minutes of freedom.

Guards were escorting the inmate back to the Brandon Correctional Centre in Brandon, Man., from the city's hospital on Monday afternoon when police allege he refused to enter the prisoner transport vehicle and kept walking.

Wade Miller knew he was talking to a winner when he first interviewed Mike O’Shea in 2013.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers president and chief executive officer told the story at a press conference Friday, where he and O’Shea talked about the three-year contract extension the head coach had recently signed through the 2025 season.

That first interview took place with Blue Bombers general manager Kyle Walters in the Toronto airport, a city where O’Shea had been the Argonauts’ special teams co-ordinator for four seasons.
