CPKC had another strong week of grain delivery during Week 10 of the 2024-25 crop year, moving nearly 623,500 tonnes of Canadian grain and grain products October 6th through 12th.
Cochrane's Jacket Racket to offer free winter gear Saturday
Cochrane residents in need will have the chance to shop for winter gear tomorrow as the growing need for winter essentials continues in our community.
Jacket Racket provides community members with access to gently used winter clothing, helping them stay warm throughout the season.
Last year 551 residents accessed winter gear at the annual event.
There will also be Halloween costumes on hand.
AFN vote on $47.8B child welfare reform deal doesn't pass after lengthy debate
First Nations chiefs have voted to reject a landmark $47.8-billion child welfare reform deal, reached in July with the Canadian government.
At a special chiefs assembly in Calgary hosted by the Assembly of First Nations, 267 out of 414 chiefs voted against a resolution in support of the deal after a lengthy debate that at points was emotionally charged as they argued either for or against it.
Helping Hands food drive Saturday in south Cochrane
Cochrane's south residents are being reminded about the upcoming Helping Hands food drive happening tomorrow.
Volunteers will be making their rounds in Fireside, River Heights, Rivercrest, Riversong, The Willows, Precedence and Riviera, collecting food donations for the Cochrane Food Bank.
Food Security Programs Manager with the Helping Hands Society of Cochrane & Area, April Baird says they're asking residents to leave their donations on their front step for tomorrow morning.
GALLERY: Gens doubleheader opens Friday against Okotoks
The Cochrane Generals open their two-game homestand this weekend tonight (Oct. 18) at 8 p.m. against the HJHL defending champion Okotoks Bisons.
Sunday at 2:30 p.m., the Red Deer Vipers are in town for their first game of the season against the Gens.
After six games on the road, fans packed Totem One for the Gens home season opener. The Gens sailed to a 6-1 win over the High River Flyers.
Horticultural society donates to Spirit Winds Ranch
The valuable programs of the Spirit Winds Ranch Society are the latest to benefit from the semiannual plant sales of the Cochrane & District Horticultural Society.
On Oct. 16, society members presented a $880 donation, thanks to the proceeds of their fall plant sale in September.

Council to decide on transit funding during budget deliberations
Exactly what the future holds for local transit has been put on hold until the 2025 budget deliberations of town council.
At its Oct. 15 meeting, council declined to give the greenlight to developing a detailed transit service design and a 2025 implementation plan based on a contracted 64-hour weekday service. In a 4-2 vote, the majority of councillors want to first understand where the funding fits into the overall draft budget. The draft budget isn't scheduled to be presented to council until Oct. 21.
Canadian Grain Commission dipping into surplus to keep fees steady
The Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) is going to be reaching into its surplus for the first time in a while in order to cover its cost.
That comes as grain volumes are falling for Canada, and the commission needs more funds to keep up with their costs.
That's why they're dipping into their surplus, with Head Commissioner David Hunt explaining that came from their most recent financial review.

Jackie Stefaniuk from Cochrane is still amazed by the response she's received after rescuing a dog from the Kananaskis River while paddle boarding this summer.
The dramatic rescue was caught on video on Aug. 11 by onlookers after Stefaniuk had just completed a downriver race at KanFest.
