Morden Chamber of Commerce reports steady growth and a full, diverse board 

Lots of shaking of hands and conversations happened at Thursday's Morden Chamber of Commerce 2023 AGM at the Morden 55+ Activity Centre.  

Board Chair Tyler Schroeder was pleased with the full crowd, and the rate of growth the organization has seen, because of targeted efforts through the Strategic Plan.

Morden Mayor Nancy Penner issued her first State of the City Address to a full house at the Morden Chamber of Commerce AGM on Thursday.  

Many topics of interest for eventgoers covered were water treatment plant, wastewater, Stanley Trail and healthcare worker recruitment plan updates, as well as plans for algae control in Lake Minnewasta through algae sonic ultra sonic control equipment.

Morden Mayor Nancy Penner voted back onto AMM council 

When Morden Mayor Nancy Penner decided to run for her newly elected position as mayor, she had to resign her position as councilor for the city and from a position on the Association of Manitoba Municipalities (AMM) as Central District Director for the region.   

Now back in the municipal representative community, Penner took another bid for the director role. 

Morden Nurseries - serving the Pembina Valley for 60 years

Morden Nurseries is celebrating 60 years as a family business with three generations shaping the business as the region grows and changes.  

Second generation daughter of Herman and Els Temmerman, Monique Rampton said they bought it from someone at the current location after they moved to the area from Winnipeg. 

"Mom and Dad bought it in 1964. Dad continued to work for the Research Station until 1980. My mom did a lot of the work during the day before that, and then he came on a little bit more full-time, and always had evening help, and kids help along with it."  

Pink Shirt Day at Minnewasta School focuses on Inclusion 

This week at Minnewasta School in Morden, Guidance Counselor and Grade Two Teacher Laura Thwaites has gone to each classroom to read books and to talk with students about Pink Shirt Day. While yesterday was the International Day of Pink, Thwaites said the school was unable to recognized Pink Shirt Day in February with all the I Love to Read and staff appreciation activities in the school. Pink Shirt Day coincided with International Day of Pink that also focuses on inclusion and the acceptance of others.  

Morden Fire & Rescue Chief Andy Thiessen encourages proactive measures for burning this spring

With low precipitation levels and warmer temperatures for this time of year, Morden Fire and Rescue Chief Andy Thiessen has a reminder for those cleaning up yards and fields a bit earlier this spring. 

"We're getting ourselves into the spring season and with that comes grass fires and that type of thing. We can eliminate a lot of that if we are a little proactive in preparing ourselves before we light the match. It's not saying that we can't clean up the yard site or the grass area, but there are some precautions we can take."
