WSD creating problem solvers through Building Thinking Classrooms approach to math  

Western School Division Numeracy Coach Korina Peters guides teachers in a reflective approach to teaching math through modelling lessons in the classroom, assessing student learning together. It's part of supporting teachers through the Manitoba Rural Learning Consortium (mRLC) Numeracy Achievement Program (NAP), aimed at encouraging teachers to try different teaching practices to find the most effective ways to improve student learning in math. 

Peters supports 30 teachers through NAP, providing a safe place to answer these three questions.  

Irish Ceili showcases dancers of all abilities 

Friday night, the annual Irish Ceili took place at Morden's Kenmor Theatre, with Irish dancers of all school ages showcasing reels, jigs and other dances they have learned throughout the year.  

Irish Dance Instructor Cathy Savage recapped the evening.  

“This was a fabulous night. These kids did amazing, and it was so nice to see so many people out supporting Danceworks and the Irish dancers and Tom is always the Irish Cowboy, he just rocks it. It's so much fun to have." 

With increasing enrolment, and new school opening, Western meets with Province about financial pressures

With increasing enrolment, and a new school opening, Western School Division (WSD) Board of Trustees met with the education minister Nello Altomare about the financial pressures it's facing.     

Board Chair Brian Fransen said between the years 2020 and 2022, WSD's assessment base increased by 5.58%. Over that same time period, Western's enrolment grew by more than 14%. 

Every drop still counts as Morden moves back to Normal Drought Stage 

Early December, the City of Morden moved to the Moderate Drought Stage, due to low water levels at Lake Minnewasta, urging residents to conserve water.  

This week, Mayor Nancy Penner had some good news for residents.  

"We're happy to say we're back into Normal Drought Stage according to our drought plan. The last little bit of moisture we got put the lake up. We're only down 3 feet now. That is outlined in our drought plan. We're back to normal." 

Several scams reported to Winkler Police along with theft, impaired driving and sexual assault

A arrest warrant was issued for a suspect after the investigation into a report of a flatbed trailer stolen from a business on Cargill Road was made on February 27th. According to the Winkler Police Service (WPS) report, a different trailer had been stolen from this business several days earlier.  

Six-year-old getting a surgery she has been waiting most of her life for  

Reinfeld's Vanessa Popp was a quiet and sleepy baby but started talking at one year. She is a very active girl and loves her two brothers. She likes to create things using Play-Doh. Her mom, Lydia said she is kind of shy with strangers but once she gets comfortable with someone, she is quite a talker and loves to tell stories.

This year Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, started on Monday, March 11th and during this time Muslims around the world will refrain from eating and drinking from dawn until sunset, avoid impure thoughts, and bad behavior until the end of Ramadan, which is estimated to be on April 9th, according to the lunar, Islamic calendar, this depends on the sighting of the new moon.

Rural Interest Group visit hopes to attract future doctors to BTHC 

It's no secret, more doctors are needed to meet the growing population in the Pembina Valley. Visits like the Rural Interest Group brought thirty first- and second-year medical students from the University of Manitoba for a day of hands-on experience and for the first time during one of these visits. Second year medical student Vienna Peters is from Morden, She is also the co-president of the Rural Interest Group (RIG), a team of six medical students that work and collaborate with the rural health regions to bring mainly first and second year medical students to the different regions for clinical skills training, networking and giving them an opportunity to learn about rural life and what rural opportunities are available in rural regions across Manitoba.
