Judging by the number of trains that continue to pass through the center of Portage la Prairie, you might think things were back to normal with Canada's rail lines. However, the country's main railways continue to work to ramp back up following the rail shutdown in the latter part of August.

CN's Assistant Vice President of Grain, David Przednowek says the process takes some time noting the key to an efficient ramp up or recovery is a very measured and planned ramp down.

The Canadian Entrepreneurs' Incentive program is undergoing some changes, but agriculture groups say that's not enough to help out farmers.

That's meant to help out small business owners with a tax break, but that's been out of reach for many farmers.

Kyle Larkin, the Executive Director at the Grain Growers of Canada, says now that's been changed but it may not be enough.

Farmers are trying to work on the harvest in between the rain. 

This week's crop report shows Agro-Manitoba received variable amounts of precipitation over the past seven days. Precipitation for the past week ranged from 0.6 mm to 77.8 mm with areas of the Northwest and Southwest regions accumulating the largest amounts of precipitation. Minitonas (77.8 mm) received the most precipitation. Rain was reported in the Interlake, Northwest, and Southwest region over the last week.

The Canada Industrial Relations Board released its decision late Saturday, reinforcing the Labour Minister's order for binding arbitration and the extension of collective agreements until a new deal is signed. 

A statement on the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference website says they will comply with the decision but will also appeal the ruling to federal court.

CN started gearing up late last week, while CPKC workers were back on the job early this morning.

A key highlight during the Canadian Beef Industry Conference is the naming of the 2024 national winners for The Environmental Stewardship Award (TESA).

TESA recognizes producers who go above and beyond standard industry conservation practices and set positive examples for their peers and the general public. 

Among the finalists for the national title is the Association of Manitoba Community Pastures (AMCP).

The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference says the roughly 9000 CN and CPKC workers involved could walk out as of 12:01 am Thursday.

The Executive Director of the Western Grain Elevators Association (WGEA) Wade Sobkowich says a national rail strike involving both railways will have a major impact, as there is no Plan B.

According to the WGEA we move roughly 50 million tonnes of grain per day by rail in Canada.

Sobkowich says the railways on Tuesday started preparing for a work stoppage situation with both railways embargoing all Canadian-origin products.
