Carberry's Carson Bjarnason reflects on first NHL experience

The Philadelphia Flyers used their second-round pick on Carberry's own Carson Bjarnason in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. The goaltender was selected 51st overall and was the first Manitoban prospect to be taken in the seven-round draft. 

Bjarnason is beyond proud of himself for becoming an NHL prospect, and while he will remember moments from that night forever, he doesn't recall hearing his name.

Leslie looking to become Portage-Lisgar MP as Bergen moves on

With Candice Bergen moving on after this term, the Portage-Lisgar will be in search of a new Conservative candidate to represent the region. 

Today, Branden Leslie stepped forward to take on the potential challenge. The Member of Parliament hopeful entered the running at an announcement event in Portage. His slogan for this campaign is 'The Right Conservative.'

Schroeder taking her talents to the pros

Corinne Schroeder has been making a name for herself in the hockey world over the last few seasons and now has the chance to turn her passion into a career. 

The 23-year-old Elm Creek native is set to play her first season in the Premier Hockey Federation (PHF) with the Boston Pride. Schroeder is coming from Quinnipiac University where she had an incredible season, breaking school records and making her way into the top ten in the NCAA for saves in a single game with 73. 

The goaltender says she couldn't be happier about making the jump.

Manitoban athletic trailblazer Gladwyn Scott's legacy to live on

Local sports legend Gladwyn Scott's name will live on with the many Manitobans he impacted during his eventful life. It was announced yesterday that Scott had passed away at 90-years-old. 

The Brandon University alumnus was a prominent figure in both baseball and hockey for over 50 years. Scott coached in both sports simultaneously from 1952 to 1986 but shifted his focus solely to baseball when he was named the vice president of Baseball Canada. 

From Macdonald Hockey Association to Hockey Manitoba, the journey of Kim Paull

An area ambassador for women's hockey has been recognized on a national level. Kim Paull is the recipient of Hockey Canada's 2022 Female Breakthrough Award. She describes her initial reaction when she found out.

"I was very surprised. When I went into volunteering, I never thought about recognition for myself, I just do it because I love to help others. So, it was very mind-blowing," Paull explains.

Portage and Carman represented well at Community Challenge Tournament

Rogue 101 Taekwondo coaches are proud of the way their competitors fared in the Community Challenge Tournament. 

The event was held last week in Winnipeg and saw 14 athletes take part, with it being the first-ever tournament for many of the competitors. Master Evelyn Hoogerdijk says as a group they left the event with seven golds, two silvers, and three bronze medals in both sparring and patterns.

Long Plain First Nation elects first female Chief in nearly 60 years

Long Plain First Nation has elected their second-ever female Chief. 

Kyra Wilson accumulated the most votes in the community’s election on April 14, according to unofficial results posted online, with the official results expected this week.

The former therapist and social worker will become Long Plains’ first female Chief since the 1970s.

Wilson ran in Manitoba’s provincial election in 2016 and grew up around politics as her father was a politician based in Saskatchewan.

Zone 4 High School Hockey League President weighs in on season

The Portage Collegiate Trojans finished the season as the Zone 4 High School Hockey League Champions.

It was a very successful year for the league as a whole, especially considering the obstacles they faced. League president Mandy Friesen says it was a battle of the two most experienced teams in the final.

"There was a lot of Grade 12s on both teams and I think both of them had the very distinct goal of capturing the zone banner this year," says Friesen. "Everybody left it all out on the ice that night. It was a good game to be at."
