Health sector reacting to physician services agreement

In part, the agreement features $268 million in increased funding over four years to help stabilize medical services and support recruitment and retention. The agreement includes a 6.1 per cent increase in funding over four years for physician services.

Ritchot boasting strong year for construction, though new housing starts lagging

The Mayor of Ritchot says new housing starts might be way down this year, but construction as a whole is still thriving in his municipality.

From January 1st through June 30th of this year, there were 122 building permits taken out worth $34.4 million. Compare that with the same period last year when there were 130 permits pulled for a combined $33.6 million.

"We're very happy with the numbers," says Chris Ewen. "We didn't think it would get to these strong numbers and they are here, and they look like they are going to continue for the rest of the year."

Funding announced for ride-share initiative in Ritchot

Our provincial government has announced funding for the Rural Municipality of Ritchot for a project that will protect the environment.

Last Friday, Environment and Climate Minister Kevin Klein promised $150,000 for a rural car share initiative. 

"We're very excited about this," says Mayor Chris Ewen. "Since the day I started (we've) always been about experimenting and taking opportunities with green initiatives and this is one of the big ones we're going to be stepping into."

Wanted criminal captured in Steinbach then released; MB Justice Minister continues to push for bail reform

Manitoba's Attorney General and Manitoba Justice Minister Kelvin Goertzen says he is hopeful that the appointment of a new federal Justice Minister will not slow down the process of bail reform. On Wednesday, Toronto Member of Parliament Arif Virani was appointed Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada.

Bail reform became a hot topic again in Steinbach last week after SteinbachOnline.com broke the story that one of Manitoba's most wanted criminals had recently been arrested, only to be released on a promise to appear in court. 

$6 million in cocaine confiscated at Emerson border crossing

It is the largest narcotics seizure at a Manitoba port of entry in the last five years. And, it happened earlier this month at Emerson.

On July 14th, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers discovered and seized over 63 kilograms of suspected cocaine following the examination of a commercial truck at the Emerson port of entry.

RCMP search for mother and abducted child

St. Pierre RCMP are requesting the public's help in locating a mother and her three-year-old daughter.

Thirty-five-year-old Holly Malleck, whose last known address was Niverville, is wanted for parental abduction of her three-year-old daughter Amelia Deonaraine.

RCMP was notified on July 7th of a custody dispute. Officers conducted an extensive investigation and determined that Malleck had taken custody of the child with the intent to deprive the father of his parental rights.
