Former Loewen CEO Al Babiuk remembered for his leadership and integrity after fatal collision

The former President and CEO of Loewen is being remembered as an incredible person. 

Al Babiuk died in a two-vehicle collision on Saturday which occurred just east of Ninette on Highway 23.

Jon Sawatzky, Director of Product and Marketing, says Babiuk made a huge impact in the business. 

Speed limit reduced to 30 km/h in school zones, effective today

Even though the school year only begins next week, the reduced speed limits are now in effect within school zones. 

RCMP Community Constable Dennis Redikop says there will soon be a lot of young pedestrians to watch out for, and motorists should now be prepared to slow down and help keep the children safe as they walk or ride bicycles to and from school. 

Quick-thinking 10-year-old from Sprague prevents disaster with fire safety know-how

An 10-year-old hero from Sprague is encouraging kids to learn about fire safety. 

Lochlon Blatz's quick reaction to a smoke alarm at home saved his siblings and their home. 

A plastic container on the stove had caught fire while their mom was mowing the lawn, and their dad was at work. 

He recalls some tips he learned from the open house at the Steinbach Fire Hall. 

Fire crews quickly deal with attic fire at Cornerstone Bible Church

Update at 4:20 PM:

Steinbach Fire Chief, Kel Toews, says the cause of the fire was electrical.

"When we got here the attic was charged with smoke. So we went up on the roof, cut a few exploratory holes and found that the structure was charred. The cause was electrical and so we had to peel back insulation until we got to clean installation, no charred insulation and now we're cleaning up now."

He adds that due to the nature of the fire, damage will be primarily related to the access holes made in the roof.

Photographer's adventure with bald eagles and playful coyote pups

It has been a great spring for wildlife photographer Jen Normand of New Bothwell. 

Armed with a newer and stronger camera, she has been able to get some great photos of eagles watching over their nest. 

Normand says certain times of day are better than others for capturing fantastic images. 

“In my opinion, I would say dusk and dawn, it’s the perfect lighting and it really makes the photos pop.” 

Falcon Lake family escapes cottage as bear binges on sandwiches

A family in Falcon Lake had an unwanted guest at their cottage and required the help of RCMP and Conservation Officers. 

Brayden Juras says he had heard some loud crashes early Monday morning and thought it was his brother getting ready for work or to go on a fishing trip. 

His parents also heard loud noises and his dad investigated. 

He found a bear eating dog food from a container that had been closed. Where was the dog? She had passed away a couple of days earlier.
