Steinbach woman makes over 1,000 blankets to give away

When you walk into the home of Betty Petkau, it is normal to see her dining room table covered with carefully cut pieces of fabric, and her sewing machine. Her spare room also serves as a storage room for the stacks of finished blankets, ready to be given away.

This 84-year-old woman has a heart for people and a strong desire to offer beautifully crafted blankets to anyone in need.

Feeling a sense of urgency to get crops off the fields

As farmers rush to get their crops off the field before the cold weather sets in, there is optimism that this will be a good year for producers.

Louis Courcelles with Dale Air Services near Morris says overall, everything looks favourable for farmers.

"The prices are good, the crop is good, but the inputs have never been higher,” he notes.

With a greater risk, Courcelles is hoping this will translate into a greater reward for farmers.

Courcelles reflects on the hot, dry conditions last year, and then a lot of rain this year.

Less than one week to submit nominations for civic elections

We will soon have a list of candidates for this year's civic elections.

Nominations will be received until the end of the business day on Tuesday, September 20th.

Each municipal office has different hours of operation. You can find out details by visiting their website or phoning their office.

When drop-off dates were given for submitting forms, Monday, September 19th was included.

With that being the day of the funeral for her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, some municipalities will close for that day.

Heartbreaking loss as some animals die in Steinbach pet store blaze

Despite the best efforts of emergency crews, only some of the animals were rescued from Sunday’s fire at Best West Pet Food Store in Steinbach.

Manager Steven Larson is thankful his employee was not injured, and he is heartbroken for the animals they could not save.

Larson says the employee smelled smoke during the afternoon and saw it coming in through the air vents, and then called 911.
