2 people dead, 1 injured in a shooting early Saturday morning

Early Saturday morning (August 12) at approximately 12:35 am, Morris RCMP, along with officers from Emerson and St-Pierre-Jolys, responded to a residence in the RM of Morris, on a report that a 32-year-old male had shot a 65-year-old female and wounded a 59-year-old male. 

It was also reported that the 32-year-old male had shot himself.

Foraging botanist offers helpful tips on harvesting edible plants in the wild

As more people show an interest in wild foraging, botanist Laura Reeves with Prairie Shore Botanicals near Gardenton offers some advice on harvesting wild edible plants. 

She says this is a good year for wild foraging, pointing out that we do not have to look far to find edible plants.

As part of its ongoing commitment to conserve and enhance fish and wildlife, the Manitoba government has approved $473,000 for new projects this year through the Fish and Wildlife Enhancement Fund (FWEF), Natural Resources and Northern Development Minister Greg Nesbitt announced today.

Special Air Quality Statement continues as forest fire smoke settles in

Environment Canada has issued a Special Air Quality Statement due to wildfire smoke causing poor air quality and reduced visibility. 

According to the Manitoba Government website, there are 47 active forest fires in Manitoba, and one of them is burning out of control. That one is located north of Grand Rapids. It was detected 23 days ago, on June 29, covering 18,562 hectares. 

Museum curator says faith helped 23,000 Mennonites move to Canada 100 years ago

The Lichtenau Church is highlighted as an important piece of Mennonite history when approximately 23,000 Mennonites came from the Soviet Union to Canada 100 years ago. 

Andrea Klassen, senior curator at Mennonite Heritage Village, says the Lichtenau church was built in Ste. Elizabeth, near Morris, and now sits at the museum in Steinbach. 

$150,000 granted to school in Sprague to support mental health education

The Manitoba Teachers’ Idea Fund is supporting mental health programming at Ross L. Gray School in Sprague. 

A grant of $150,000 is going toward Infusing the 5T's of Mental Health into the Mamàhtawisiwin Framework. The 5T’s refer to talking, training, teaching, tools, and taking care.
