Manitoba residents and cottage owners have flooded into Northwestern Ontario as the Manitoba/Ontario border restrictions were lifted last Wednesday.

Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford addressed the media last week on the re-opening of the border.

“Hopefully we can just enjoy and celebrate with family, friends, and fellowship of the people of Manitoba and borders beyond across the country, and that everyone will be safe in enjoying what we have here,” said Rickford

“This has always been about good faith and people's personal individual responsibilities to do the right thing. There are safety protocols in place here in northwestern Ontario and across the province of Ontario,” added Rickford

Rickford did note that he has had communications with the Deputy Premier of Manitoba to create a safe re-opening of the border.

“There's obviously an urgency by Manitoba folks, many who've been vaccinated who want to check up on their property, get work done and enjoy Lake of the Woods,” noted Rickford

Manitoba cottage owners that do enter Ontario do not have to self-isolate upon re-entry back into Manitoba.

The Northwestern Health Unit has updated its website for travel recommendations of residents leaving and re-entering the province.
