Local players represent Okotoks at Alberta Cup Hockey Tournament
A few local hockey players are looking to earn a spot on the Team Alberta U16 roster this fall.
The Alberta Cup Hockey Tournament was held in Red Deer on April 24.
Team Alberta Red took gold with local players Hudson Pineda on defence, and Nolan Ilsley and Max Mullen as forwards.
Swift Current records warm May with below average precipitation
It was a significantly warmer May than on average for Swift Current.
Last month, the city experienced an average temperature of 13.2°C, well above the 140-year May normal of 10.7 °C.
Christy Climenhaga, a scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, said the majority of Saskatchewan saw temperatures 2-4 °C above normal in May.
Chestermere garage sales raises funds to help resident following kidney transplant
The Chestermere Annual Parade of Garage Sales took place in the city over the weekend.
Around 200 homes took part in the city-wide event, with around 1,000 residents attending.
One of the garage sales was made to raise funds for Cam Kenney, with the funds being used to support him after a kidney transplant.
"I have Type 1 diabetes and celiac disease, and because of having both, it breaks up my kidney function," said Kenney. "I have swelling in my legs all the time, and it can take days for food to digest."
Southeast firefighters deployed to help with northern wildfires
Several southeast firefighters have been deployed to help battle the growing wildfires in northern Saskatchewan.
Carlyle Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief Rob Klassan said the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) put out a provincewide request for assistance as fires continue to burn near northern communities.
Wildfire danger remains extreme across most of Manitoba, province says
Manitoba remains under a provincewide state of emergency, the provincial government says, with most of the province considered to be under extreme fire danger.
In an update released late Tuesday afternoon, the Manitoba Wildfire Service (MWS) explains that while some rain is expected across the province's north, it won't be enough to make a difference. The provincial state of emergency is expected to be in place until June 26, it says.

Thousands of people are now fleeing wildfires in the northern part of Saskatchewan, and there are fires burning in Manitoba and Alberta, as well. The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) announced a hotline (1-855-559-5502) yesterday that anyone can call for information about the current fires, as well as to volunteer any resources that might help, including time, equipment, services, or a place for evacuees to stay.
Red Deer Graduates show off their creative side
Red Deer students showcase artwork at public exhibition.
Graduates from Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School and Hunting Hills High School are having their artwork presented in Red Deer.
The Red Deer Arts Council and Red Deer Public Library present "Hang Ups and Insights", a showcase now in its 17th year.
It features artwork from students in the Baccalaureate Art Programs and Advanced Placement courses from the graduating class of 2025.
The exhibition runs until June 23 in the Kiwanis Gallery at the Red Deer Public Library.
2025 Manitoba 55 Plus Games begin in Steinbach
The 2025 Manitoba 55 Plus Games officially kicked off Monday night in Steinbach, with cheers, music, dancing, and heartfelt words.
The Pat Porter Active Living Centre buzzed with energy as over 200 athletes, volunteers, dignitaries, and guests gathered for the opening ceremony of the province’s largest multi-sport event for adults 55 and older.
Michelle Sawatzky-Koop emceed the evening. “It's gonna be a wonderful three days,” she said. “I admire you all for your dedication to being active and your ability to have fun. It’s never too late to be incredible at what you do!”
Top central Alberta bus drivers qualify for provincial competition
The Local School Bus Road-eo took place in late May, with drivers from two school divisions qualifying for the provincial competition on Saturday in Nisku.
The annual event brings together divisions and transportation providers from across central Alberta—including Wolf Creek Public Schools (WCPS), Chinook’s Edge School Division, Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools and Prairie Bus Lines—to collaborate on a fun and competitive challenge course designed to highlight the precision, professionalism and safety focus of school bus drivers.
