Gull Lake student's essay wins national Legion award

A daughter's love and respect for military service will lead to a very special trip.

Gull Lake's Brooklyn Stanford and her Canadian military veteran father Steve are headed to the 2025 National Remembrance Day Ceremony in Ottawa.

Their trip is the result of Brooklyn's essay winning The Legion National Foundation National Youth Remembrance Senior Essay - Literary Contest. 

Voting is open for Top of the Country competition that features local artist Brettyn Rose

The SiriusXM and CCMA Top of the Country competition is open for voting, and a local musician is in the running.

Brettyn Rose is currently one of the eight semi-finalists in the competition, and she was recently in Toronto recording one of her songs as part of it.

"It has been so cool. I've watched this program for so many years, and to now be an artist in it," Rose explained. "There's so many talented people around here, and to be selected as a semi-finalist was absolutely insane, and it's been a crazy cool experience."

Canada grinds out win over Czechia to stay on top of the standings

Czechia took down two giants in Team China and Team Scotland, but they couldn't take down the third giant in Canada during Wednesday evening's draw at the BKT World Men's Curling Championship at Temple Gardens Centre.

Canada stole a total of eight points throughout the game to grind out an 8-3 win. It wasn't their best performance, only curling 86 per cent as a team.

Third Marc Kennedy talked about the mental toughness needed to win a game like that, as well as getting through the week.

UPDATE: Airdrie commuters face delays after multi-vehicle collision

A multi-vehicle collision was causing delays for Airdrie's afternoon commuters.

According to reports, there was a five-vehicle collision northbound on 8th Street just north of the intersection with Yankee Valley Boulevard. The scene has since been cleared.

More snow is forecasted to fall tonight in Airdrie.

Chinese loss puts Canada alone in first place

Team China took a 10-3 loss to Czechia during the Wednesday afternoon draw at the BKT World Men’s Curling Championship at Temple Gardens Centre.

China drops their record to 6-2, while Canada sits atop the standings at 6-1.

Despite having three losses, Czechia has been giant slayers at this championship as they have picked up wins now against China and Scotland. They have a chance to take down another giant when they meet Canada tonight in the evening draw at 7 pm.

Hazlet history book tells local stories

After five and a half years of work, the latest book on Hazlet's history is now available.

Celebrating Hazlet and Our Community came out in two volumes on March 21st.

"We're writing a history of the Hazlet and district community," said committee member Patti Shannon. "We had put a book together in the 80s, and there was a group of people who felt there was a need for another history book. In 2019, we had a committee of nine interested people who wanted to put another history book together for the community."

Woman dead after Stoney Trail crash; police say unknown vehicle fled scene

A 57-year-old woman is dead after a late-night multi-vehicle collision on Stoney Trail N.W., and police say an unknown vehicle — believed to be a semi-truck and trailer combination — did not remain at the scene.

Officers responded at approximately 11:49 p.m. Tuesday to a collision in the southbound lanes of Stoney Trail, near the bridge deck at Nose Hill Drive N.W.
