Large slash pile fire quickly contained by multiple fire crews

A small wildfire in a large slash pile in the Tsuu T'ina Nation just north of Bragg Creek and close to the Rocky View County boundary was quickly brought under control by multiple fire services, including Cochrane, late Feb. 21.

The combined efforts of the Redwood Meadows, Rocky View, Foothills, and Cochrane firefighters successfully limited its spread within two hours.

Shortly before midnight, Redwood Meadows Emergency Services reported the fire had been turned over to Tsuut'ina fire officials to monitor throughout the night.

Children’s book by Manitoba premier didn't break conflict rules: commissioner

Manitoba’s ethics commissioner says Premier Wab Kinew didn't violate conflict of interest rules in writing a children's book.

Jeffrey Schnoor dismissed the complaint by Fort Garry legislature member Mark Wasyliw, who accused Kinew of violating the Conflict of Interest Act.

Wasyliw alleged Kinew submitted his children's book, "An Anishinaabe Christmas," to Penguin Random House after he became premier in 2023, breaching conflict of interest rules.

In a decision Wednesday, Schnoor said the allegation is unfounded.

Update: Rocky View County officials: Crews responding to wildfire near Bragg Creek

Just after 8 p.m., Rocky View County officials noted that emergency crews had responded to a wildfire burning on Tsuu T’ina lands near the Rocky View County boundary, north of the hamlet of Bragg Creek.

Multiple emergency services were on the scene, working to contain the fire.

Selkirk RCMP search for missing 19-year-old man, vehicle found damaged in ditch

Selkirk RCMP are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a missing 19-year-old man.

Kristopher Sandy was last seen Feb. 20 at around 10 p.m. leaving his home to go for a drive in the R.M. of St. Clements.

Sandy's vehicle was found damaged in a ditch off Highway 12 just before 7 a.m. Friday.  However,  when crews arrived on scene there was no one in the vehicle. 

Sandy is described 6’0 tall, thin build, shoulder-length curly dark hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a grey jacket and jeans.

Shots fired: Lloydminster RCMP arrest two after stolen vehicle chase

Two people are facing charges after a stolen vehicle incident in Lloydminster led to a police confrontation and gunfire.

Lloydminster RCMP said officers located a stolen vehicle around 1 p.m. on Feb. 20. During their interaction with the occupants, a confrontation occurred, prompting an officer to discharge their firearm. The vehicle then fled the scene before crashing into a residence a short time later.

Who was Strathmore veteran George Freeman?

It's hard to live in Strathmore without knowing the name George Freeman, but who was he?

Freeman, who has a school and road in Strathmore named after him, lived in town for decades working alongside groups such as Ducks Unlimited and the Royal Canadian Legion in Strathmore.

According to Jenny Schumann, treasurer with the local Legion, Freeman was a veteran, who stormed the beaches of Normandy during World War II.

"The mural at the Legion, George can remember being in that boat landing on the beaches of D-Day, just as clear as that mural was."
