Denton Mateychuk has been all gas, no brake this season for the Moose Jaw Warriors.
With three assists in Sunday’s 5-1 win over Edmonton, Mateychuk set a new franchise record for longest point streak in the modern era (1996-2023) at 21 games, breaking the mark set by Jagger Firkus last season.
“It’s a pretty cool moment,” Mateychuk said after the game. “Looking at all the players that have come through here, tons of good players, especially even [Firkus], we were just chuckling about it in the room after.”
The 19-year-old defenceman has picked up a point in every game this season, giving him six goals and 33 points over the course of the streak.
Mateychuk said the streak has been in the back of his mind for the past few weeks.
“Once it got to 16 games, that’s when it’s like, ‘Okay, this is getting up there,’ and then the last couple, just kept going and finally got to 21,” he said.
“I had it in the back of my head, but you don’t think about the record really. [Firkus] had a bunch of games last year, I remember it felt like forever that he had that streak going.”
The previous mark for longest point streak by a defenceman in franchise history was 11 games, set by Travis Hamonic in 2009-10.
While Mateychuk would like to continue adding to the total over the next few weeks, he said his biggest focus right now is the team’s success.
The Warriors have won four straight coming off a sweep of their two-game road trip to Alberta over the weekend, which also included a 5-2 win in Red Deer on Friday.
“Our last trip here, we had lost two and that was a big talking point in the room during practice,” Mateychuk said. “We knew that we were struggling on the road a bit last month, so we wanted to emphasize that it’s big to get a couple of road wins and we came in and did the job.”
Mateychuk and the Warriors will now return to the Hangar for two games this week, starting with a rematch against the Rebels on Wednesday night.
The team will head to Brandon on Friday before hosting the Saskatoon Blades for a big East Division battle on Saturday.
