Provinces west of Ontario, have announced their plans to fully re-open in the coming weeks. Ontario has taken a more cautious approach to reopening and won’t see a full reopening comparable to western provinces until at least the end of next month.

In a media briefing yesterday Dr. Kit Young Hoon Medical Officer of the Northwestern Health Unit commented on the possibility of an accelerated Step Two start date.

“Our case numbers are low and our vaccine coverage rates are high. I think reopening earlier would not necessarily pose a major risk for our area,” said Young Hoon

Young Hoon did add that even though the risk would be low across the district, the province does have to consider risks in other health regions before making a decision to begin Step Two earlier.

As of yesterday, the NWHU reported 73.1 percent of people 18 years of age and older have received their first dose, and 46.7 per cent being fully vaccinated.

To enter Step Two 70 per cent of people have had to have received at least one dose of the COVID 19 vaccine and 20 per cent of the population is fully vaccinated.

The province of Ontario is scheduled to move forward into Step Two of the Roadmap to Reopen on July 2, 2021.
