Some changes are being made to how the province reports COVID-19 data.

Alberta's chief medical officer of health, Dr Deena Hinshaw, provided the update Tuesday (June 22), saying that with cases of COVID-19 dropping and vaccination rates climbing, the province would no longer be reporting COVID-19 cases or vaccine numbers on weekends.

"We are entering a new phase in our fight against this virus," she explained.

She added that the R-value reports will be shifting from weekly to bi-weekly reporting.

June 29 will also be the last live media availability Hinshaw provides, adding that live updates would still be provided as needed.

"We're making great progress; all of our public health efforts will keep going. Contact tracing, testing and other important work continues day in and day out, but in addition to COVID-19, there are other health issues that need our time and attention."

Provincial update

There are 1,773 active cases in the province, 57 new from the previous day.

Currently, 200 people are in the hospital, with 54 Albertans in intensive care. One more death was reported Tuesday, bringing the total to 2,293.

There have been 3,854,208 doses of the vaccine in Alberta given out so far; 70.8 per cent of the eligible population has had their first dose, while 30.4 per cent is now fully immunized.

Local update

There are currently 55 active COVID-19 cases in Grande Prairie, and 17 in the County of Grande Prairie.
