Starting in the new year, Saskatchewan residents will not be paying the federal carbon tax on their home heating bills.
SaskEnergy and SaskPower have removed the federal carbon tax which will result in savings for 98 per cent of Saskatchewan families. This is the provincial government’s response to the federal government exempting home heating oil from the carbon tax.
It’s expected that the removal of the carbon tax from SaskEnergy bills will save the average customer $400 per year.
SaskPower will be eliminating the carbon tax by reducing the carbon tax rate rider by 60 per cent. According to the provincial government, heating accounts for up to 60 per cent of electric consumption during the winter. About 30,000 SaskPower customers use electric heat and they can expect an average savings of $21 per month throughout the winter.
Customers will still see federal carbon tax charges on their January utility bills for natural gas and electricity used for heating in the month of December. The carbon tax will appear as a charge and a reversal credit for any usage on or after Jan. 1.
SaskEnergy customers on an equalized payment plan will see their payments adjusted at the beginning of February.
