The Dryden GM Ice Dogs held their annual General Membership Meeting last week and ironed out events for next season including their home opener.
For the Ice Dogs home opener, their plan is to host a Vaccinators Night to thank the hardworking health care workers from the region.
“We thought it would be appropriate to recognize the efforts of the health unit and the vaccination team in getting our region through these stages, these benchmarks of vaccination that allow us to go back on the ice and play in front of fans and have the community gather again, that's our MO for opening night to honor the vaccinators from the health unit,” said Mike Sveinson President of the Dryden GM Ice Dogs
According to Sveinson, Dr. Kit Young Hoon Medical Officer of Health for the Northwestern Health Unit will be dropping the puck at the ceremonial faceoff at centre ice.
“I've asked her what she thought of that [dropping the puck], and we've got a pretty good reception. Of course, you know a lot of that depends on the public health restrictions at that time,” added Sveinson
Like a lot of hockey leagues across Canada, the COVID-19 pandemic restricted the Ice Dogs to only play six games last season before the league was shut down.
With the announcement of Step Three of the provinces Roadmap to Reopen plan to start Friday, Sveninson is hopeful and excited to have fans back in the stands this fall.
