Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries is preparing for a lottery unlike any other.

People scrolling their social media timelines could soon see graphics from the province promoting its vaccine lottery program first announced more than one month ago. Atwal says it took time to work out the details, but now Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries (MBLL) is ready for the lottery.

"Manitobans just need to get their vaccinations and get their shot," Manny Atwal, CEO of MBLL says in a Monday media briefing. "Manitobans who are vaccinated outside the province and you want to opt-in for the draw, you can do that."

He says that needs to be reported to Manitoba Health and Seniors Care.

How it works

The Province of Manitoba will be gathering the health card numbers of everyone who qualifies for the lottery.

"Manitoba Health will then encrypt the Health Numbers so that nobody will know what the health numbers are."

Those numbers will be sent to MBLL, who will draw names from that list.

Within the days after the August 2 cut-off, the lottery will draw the three Winnipeg, one Prairie Mountain, one Southern Health, one Northern (Churchill included), and one Interlate Eastern number to win the $100,000 prize for adults. Ten $25,000 draws for youth scholarships will also occur.

Draws will take place a second time after the September 6 cut-off date.

This new kind of lottery required extra legal advice for MBLL.

While the health card information will be anonymous, the draw winners will not. In order to collect the lottery winnings, Manitobans must allow their name to be published, but they do not need to make any statements or media appearances.

Youth winners

Scholarship winners will be put in a trust for the youth. If a teen wins the scholarship but does not attend any kind of post-secondary training before they are 20 years old, they will need to forfeit the winnings. They cannot collect a cash prize under the province's current lottery regulations.
