The Garden Valley School Division (GVSD) has wrapped up its annual two-week period for Kindergarten registration.
Although children can be registered for Kindergarten at any time, Superintendent Dan Ward says a registration period at this time of year allows them to plan better, in terms of class placement and how many staff to deploy.
"Things went well, we had families show up at our schools that offer Kindergarten and we had families show up at the Division Office for more information. We got calls from families wondering where their children attend, in particular north of Hwy. 14, where sometimes there are different catchment lines."
Ward said much like last year, it's a little bit of a slower start. "We're still under 200 in terms of children who have registered, but what we did find last year is there were a lot of folks that registered a little bit later into the spring and even some that showed up in September."
GVSD's current Kindergarten enrolment is 290 children. Once the dust settles in the fall, Ward says they're anticipating very similar numbers for Kindergarten in 2024/25.
