On August 9, 2021, at 12:01 ET, American tourists will be able to enter Canada for non-essential reasons that have been fully vaccinated for at least 14 days.

Canadians looking to enter the United States for non-essential reasons will have to wait a little longer. On July 21, 2021, the US Department of Homeland Security extended land and sea border crossing closures until August 21, 2021.

Northwestern Ontario is a hot spot for tourists from south of the border for fishing, vacationing, and more.

Many resort owners have asked for clarity regarding American tourists re-entering into the US from Canada as the land borders in the US from Canada will still be closed.

Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford was able to clarify the confusion.

“The response we got is that as of August 9, as Americans come into Canada they will be allowed re-entry into the United States. We asked them 10 different ways, just to see if there were any loopholes, we feel we like we got the right information for them and that they will be able to cross,” said Rickford

There will be an eleven-day window from when Canada allows American’s into the country and the end of the US land border extension.

Rickford expressed his disappointment in the federal government for the lack of clarity for American tourists re-entering the US.

“That’s on the federal government’s to sort that stuff out. I’m just a little disappointed that there wasn’t more certainty around that,” added Rickford.

Fully vaccinated tourists from other countries will be allowed to enter Canada starting September 9, 2021.

The Canada/US border has been closed to out-of-country travelers since March 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic wreaking havoc across the world.
