The region has seen low case counts along with high percentages of COVID-19 vaccinations in the last few weeks.

As of yesterday, the Northwestern Health Unit reported only one new positive COVID-19 test result in the region which was the first one discovered since July 22, 2021.

Dr. Kit Young Hoon Medical Officer of Health for the NWHU gave a COVID-19 vaccine update at a media briefing yesterday.

“Currently 68.8 per cent of people aged 12 and over in the region have received two doses and 79.5 per cent of area residents aged 12 and over have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine,” said Young Hoon

“Although we need these need numbers higher, it is great to see that nearly 80 per cent of people who are eligible have decided to get vaccinated,” added Young Hoon

To date, the NWHU has administered a total of 109,788 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Northwestern Ontario is just about within the provincial vaccine thresholds needed to exit Step Three of the provinces Roadmap to Reopen Plan.

Those thresholds are 80 per cent of the eligible population aged 12 and over has received one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 75 per cent have received their second, with no public health unit having less than 70 per cent of their population fully vaccinated.
