The Humboldt Broncos are two legs up in their opening round playoff series against the Weyburn Red Wings following a pair of successful outings at the EPA this weekend.
On Friday night, the Broncos got a solid all-round performance for a 6-1 statement over the Wings.
Ben Costantino, who led all rookie defensemen in goals and points, picked up his first career playoff goal beating Red Wings Netminder, Dazza Mitchell.
Boris Kofman finished off a beautiful transition play off a board side chip from Matthew Van Blaricom followed by a centering pass from Maddox Amaral for a 2-0 lead.
Weyburn’s Jerome Maharaj scored the lone wings’ goal walking out from the corner and sliding a puck by Motew. Motew put on another outstanding display stopping all but one of 32 shots.
The train kept rolling on Saturday night with a 6-4 Bronco victory. Following a Red Wing opener from Liam Fitzgerald, Bronco defensemen Oakley McIlwain took a pass from Jacob Strizzi and Matthew Van Blaricom to square it up.
The Broncos continued to press into the second, picking up a trio of goals for a 5-2 lead.
Weyburn picked up another pair in the third in an effort to crawl back into it. Things got heated three-quarters through the third with some fisticuffs following a boarding incident. When the dust settled, Ben Costantino tucked away an empty net insurance goal, sealing Game Two in favour of the Broncos.
It’s back on the ice on Tuesday night as the Broncos head south to Weyburn for game 3. Game 4 will be played in Weyburn on Wednesday. Puck drop both nights is 7:00 pm and you can hear the play call here on 107.5 Bolt FM.
