With heavy hearts, we share the news of the passing of Abe (Abram) Hildebrand, 84, with family by his side at St. Mary’s Villa in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, on April 13, 2024. Abe was born on June 7th, 1939, to Gerhard and Anna Hildebrand near Altona, Manitoba. He was the 13th child out of the 18 children in the family. When Abe was about 2 years old the family moved to the Petaigan area near Carrot River, Saskatchewan where he spent his childhood years.
On December 20, 1963, Abe married Joan Blum. Their son, Douglas was born on July 21, 1966, they lived in Carrot River, Saskatchewan until 1971 when the family moved to The Pas, Manitoba. Their daughter Bobbie-Jo was born on February 20, 1980. Abe worked numerus jobs to provide for his family including as a Maintenance Manager for the Kelsey School Division and as a Mill Foreman for Manitoba Forestry for many years. In 1986, the family moved to Nipawin, SK to be closer to family. Abe and Joan parted ways in 1989 which resulted in Abe and Bobbie-Jo relocating to Kelvington, Saskatchewan in 1992. He worked as a mechanic until his retirement in 2005. In 2018, due to health reasons he moved to Muenster, Saskatchewan to live with his daughter Bobbie-Jo and son in-law Ross.
Abe developed a love for animals, especially horses and dogs at a young age while working on the family farm. He had a dream that one day he would have a horse of his own, in 1975, he was finally able to purchase his first team of chuckwagon horses, these were the first of many horses he would acquire over the years. He spent many hours training and caring for his horses, he had a competitive nature which was the driving force behind all of his accomplishments. Abe won numerous races and championships over the years. He took pride in having well trained horses in great shape, he often was awarded Best Dressed honours for having well matched horses and beautiful harness. Due to health reasons Abe raced his last chuckwagon race in 2013.
Abe was very mechanically inclined; he could fix just about anything. He was very creative, if there wasn’t a part available, he could usually make something work in a pinch. He enjoyed fixing tractors, making harness, building many things including chuckwagons, there are still some of his wagons on the track today. Abe was very ambitious and worked hard all his life, from the time he got up in the morning until he went to bed, he was always on the go.
