A large COVID-19 testing clinic is closing in Winnipeg.

The Thunderbird House COVID-19 testing site is closing this weekend. This site was created to serve the residents and visitors in the Point Douglas areas of Winnipeg. Many people in the area experience various degrees of homelessness and seek support from nearby centres, making the centre an ideal location. Now that testing volumes have gone down, Thunderbird will not be hosting a testing clinic. This is a stark contrast to 11 months ago, when Manitoba saw a jump in cases, overwhelming the facility.

There are others nearby, such as at Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata at 445 King Street, the Garrick Centre at 330 Garry Street. There is also a drive-thru site at MPI on 1284 Main Street.

On Wednesday, 1,590 laboratory tests were completed across Manitoba.

Enforcement

Last week had very low COVID-19 enforcement warnings and tickets.  Twenty-seven warnings and three tickets were given out.

Two of the tickets were given to individuals for failure to wear a mask in an indoor public place, and one to an unknown business.

Vaccinations

Manitoba is on the cusp of its third and final COVID-19 vaccine goal outlined in the 3-2- One Great Summer Reopening Path.

For first doses, the province has reached its goal, now sitting at 80.7 per cent. Second doses are close, at 73.5 per cent, 1.5 per cent away from the 75 per cent goal for Manitobans aged 12 and older.

New cases

There are 34 new cases as of Thursday morning, and with the combination of Tuesday's 31 cases and Wednesday's 36 cases, there are 101 newly identified.

Thursday's cases include:

  • 19 new cases in the Winnipeg health region
  • six new cases in the Southern Health–Santé Sud health region
  • five new cases in the Interlake-Eastern health region
  • three new cases in the Prairie Mountain Health region
  • one new case in the Northern health region

Two people have died since Tuesday, a male in his 90s from the Southern Health–Santé Sud health region, linked to an unspecified variant of concern, and a female in her 50s from the Winnipeg health region, linked to the B.1.1.7 (alpha) variant of concern. The total number of deaths is 1,184.

Total confirmed cases in Manitoba total 57,951, and 56,181 of those individuals are recovered. There are 586 active COVID-19 cases.

In the hospital, there are 75 people, 56 of which are no longer infectious. In intensive care, there are 11 people, with nine who are no longer infectious.
