There were 550 new cases of COVID-19 reported in Alberta on August 11, making two days in a row the province has added over 500 new cases of the virus.

The case count exceeds the 501 reported the day before, which was the highest in the province since May 27.  As Alberta plans to wind down testing, isolating and tracing starting Monday, the active cases in the province rose by 332 to 4,101.

The province also recorded another jump in the number of people that are hospitalized with the disease, rising from 138 to 146.  The number of patients in intensive care was up markedly to 36.

Local active COVID-19 cases in Grande Prairie are currently at 259, while the County of Grande Prairie has 54.

Vaccinations in Alberta continued to climb ever so slowly.  There are now 76.6 percent of eligible Albertans who have received one dose of vaccine while 67.4 percent are fully vaccinated with two doses.

Vaccination statistics for eligible citizens fully vaccinated in the local area stand at 41.1% for the City of Grande Prairie and 40.3% in the County of Grande Prairie.

The province has just announced that Dr. Deena Hinshaw and Minister of Education Adriana LaGrange will provide an update on back-to-school guidance and Alberta's plan to protect public health in schools this morning (Aug 13, 2021).

The update is scheduled to take place at 9:30 am.
