On Sunday, the Conservatives announced their plan to end the opioid crisis and invest in mental health and addictions treatment.

This investment is part of the Secure Mental Health pillar of the party's “Canada’s Recovery Plan”, which was created to rebuild the economy and secure a future for Canadians.

Incumbent Kenora MP Eric Melillo says this is an important issue to tackle after the effects the COVID-19 pandemic has had on Canadians.

“We have to ensure that we are putting resources in place to address it. When it comes to the opioid crisis specifically we have to ensure that we are treating addiction as a health issue rather than a criminal matter. Of course, our government will continue to crack down on dealers and traffickers and ensure those resources are in place,” said Melillo

“Addiction destroys lives and devastates families and communities,” Melillo concluded. “I’m glad the Conservative Party has a real plan to help people who are addicted and end the tragedy of the opioid crisis.”

The Conservatives have committed $325 million over the next three years to create 1,000 residential drug treatment beds and build 50 recovery community centres across the country. As well as provide $1 billion over five years to boost funding for Indigenous mental health and addiction treatment programs.

The Conservatives will also support innovative and culturally- appropriate approaches such as land-based treatment programs managed by Indigenous communities

In addition, the Conservatives will partner with the provinces to ensure that Naloxone kits are available for free.
