Most secondary schools across the region will play host to COVID-19 vaccination clinics during the first few weeks of the school year.

The Northwestern Health Unit says the clinics will be set up so students and members of the general public can get immunized.

"The clinics will begin in the early afternoon for students and will run until the evening to ensure accessibility," said Dr. Kit Young Hoon, Medical Officier of Health at the Northwestern Health Unit.

"The evening portion of the clinics will be available for the general public to book into or to attend as a walk-in," Dr. Young Hoon added.

The length and location of the clinics will allow for members of the school's community to receive their vaccine while also being a hub for the general public.

Everyone in Ontario that was born in 2009 or earlier is currently eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, this includes some 11-year-olds.

"There will be opportunities for students to be vaccinated and we encourage them to have [the vaccine] discussion with their health care provider or they can come to the clinic and have the discussion with the health care provider that they're gonna see," Dr. Young Hoon noted.

At this time, it's unclear when the clinics will be happening or which schools will host the clinics.

Across the region, 81.5 per cent of the eligible population (12+) have received one dose of vaccine, while 72.4 per cent are fully immunized.
