Those making a trip to Edmonton will have to mask up or wear a face-covering in any indoor public space starting on Friday (Sept.3).

Edmonton city council is reinstating its masking bylaw for all indoor public spaces, including grocery stores, restaurants, recreation facilities and retail stores.

"Medical experts have made it clear that we are in the fourth wave of COVID-19 and I applaud city council for making this decision to help keep Edmontonians safe," said mayor Don Iveson.

The measure will be in effect until the end of the year, or if the city council makes any further changes.

A threshold for active COVID-19 cases was also added to the bylaw. The bylaw will automatically cancel if cases fall below 100 per 100,000 people for 10 straight days. Currently, cases are just over 200 per 100,000 people in Edmonton.

Communities around Edmonton such as Fort Saskatchewan, Strathcona County and St. Albert do not currently have a mask bylaw in place.
