"This would obviously be a first."

Those were the words of Niverville Mayor Myron Dyck on Wednesday following a deadly shooting overnight.

Police have so far released few details. But what we do know is that an adult male is dead in relation to an officer-involved shooting. It happened sometime before 3 am in front of the Shell gas station and Tim Hortons restaurant.

This is an investigation involving RCMP and Winnipeg Police Service. At 5:42 Wednesday morning, Manitoba RCMP indicated that one female was in custody and that one male had fled the scene in a stolen vehicle.

There is also a Winnipeg Police Service vehicle on the side of Highway 59 at the Provincial Road 305 intersection. It has bullet holes in the front windshield. RCMP say this is connected to the Niverville shooting.

There is a large police presence in the area of Drovers Run in Niverville. Police say that area will be blocked off for a large portion of the day.

"We are thankful for the RCMP and their service to our community, they have a tough job to do, and they do it well," adds Dyck. "Our thoughts are with all those involved at this time."

Dyck says once more information is made available to the Town of Niverville Administration, they will do their best to pass it along.

"Thank you to the residents of Niverville for your understanding and patience at this time," adds Dyck.
