This week marks the start of Ontario’s new vaccine passport system.

As of Wednesday, September 22, 2021, Ontarians will need to show proof of vaccination to enter places such as; restaurants, conference centres and gyms.

In an interview, Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford was asked if he thought that with the new regulations, we may see more people getting vaccinated.

“We hope so and we see statistics that support that [idea] both here and across the province," he responded.

“And again, as I have said, this was not an easy decision for the government. We hope that it’s temporary, frankly. But to an extent, it incentivizes more vaccines,” added Rickford.

Rickford went on to say that he hopes the implementation of vaccine passports and the restriction of unvaccinated people in most indoor public spaces, will help to slow the spread of COVID-19, specifically the Delta variant.

Rickford mentioned that other provinces are seeing Delta variant numbers escalate quickly and that he hopes these regulations prevent Ontario from seeing similar trends.
