A friendly game of cornhole on the Main Street of Wakaw signals time for Walk Aw Day, this Saturday.

Downtown Wakaw gets a special treatment so residents and visitors can enjoy a stroll down the main street. It’s “Walk Aw Day” this Saturday, July 13, and there are all sorts of delights that await residents and visitors. The event goes from 10 am to 2 pm.

Walk Aw Day was an initiative that started last year to help support area businesses and services, says Dwane Burke, recreation and community development manager for the Town of Wakaw.

“Each time we do a Walk Aw Day, we have a hook to attract families to the area, so this Saturday, there’s a bike activity that we’re calling the Ride and Shine. It’s for kids to come and decorate their bikes and register to be entered for prizes. We’ll have them do a drive by along the closed portion of the street.”

That event is supported by the Wakaw RCMP, EMS in Wakaw, Markowski Legal Services, Wakaw Pharmacy and Country Crossroads. This year’s summer sensation also features the grand opening of a new business, Espresso Cafe, serving a wide variety of specialty coffees, cool summer drinks, paninis and much more.

Burke says it's the biggest such event the community puts on, and all local businesses are on board to help make it a success. The businesses put on their own specials, all with the friendly small town service people have come to expect.

“The Town of Wakaw takes the lead to coordinate the activities, from communicating with businesses around opportunities for promotion. The town does the marketing and handles street closures and things like that. We’re here to help support economic activity for our businesses who are the key cornerstone in our community.”

From great restaurants to friendly retailers, along with the ever-popular Farmers’ Market, Wakaw has it all, and there’s no better time to find out than this Saturday at this year’s Walk Aw Day.
