The peaceful death of Muriel Rachel von Doellen (nee Burt), 82 years, of St. Mary’s Villa, Humboldt, occurred on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, with her family at her side. Muriel was born on July 14, 1941, at Maidstone to Hedley and Bessie (nee Hinde) Burt. She attended Walter School in Maidstone until grade 5, then Benvoulin School in Kelowna, completing grade 6 to 13 at the age of 17. Her Saskatchewan roots pulled her back to the prairies where she began working in childcare in Humboldt, then moving to Bruno to do childcare for the Pulvermacher’s. That is where she met Joe von Doellen and they were married on September 21, 1963. This union was blessed with four children. In 1965, the family moved to Humboldt where Joe worked at Humboldt Flour Mills until his retirement in 1986. Muriel kept busy at home, raising their children and helping with their activities, ranging from hockey to Brownies. She was also a member of the school council for St. Dominic’s School. She later worked at the Bella Vista Inn in the housekeeping department. Muriel loved sewing, her daughters and granddaughters will remember dresses made for them, sometimes at the very last minute before the function. The Legion in Humboldt was a benefactor of many hours of her volunteerism. She was an active member as an Associate member. Muriel loved playing bingo and was a caller at the Legion bingos for many years. She was also a crib player of many Legion tournaments, and many games with family right up until shortly before her passing. After she retired, she loved that she could be close to her grandchildren and help with childcare as needed. KFC was her favorite place to go for a meal and it was also the treat she would bring for her grandchildren. They will surely think of grandma whenever they catch the aroma of KFC. She was a fantastic baker and cook. She will forever be remembered for her sticky cinnamon buns. Muriel and Joe made many camping and fishing trips with their family and children's friends, then just the two of them in retirement. They traveled to Germany to visit family, first in 1974 taking their family with them and then again just the two of them in 1992. Muriel was a social person and loved visiting with people. She was never one to sit idle, taking on newspaper delivery routes for the Star Phoenix, Humboldt Journal and East Central Connection well into retirement, running rather than walking on her route. When she became unable to drive or walk, she would be out and about town on her scooter, getting her job done, right up until 2016 when she moved into St. Mary’s Villa. Muriel settled in well and enjoyed her time there until her passing.
Muriel will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her four children, 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren: ERIKA (Gordon) Berting of St. Gregor and family Justin (Sarah) Berting of St. Gregor and children Blair and Brett, and Angie (Tony) Murray of Paradise Hill and children Chance and Everett; JOE (Barb) von Doellen of Humboldt and family Nicole von Doellen and Michael von Doellen, both of Humboldt, Meagan (Nathan) Strinja of Regina and son’s Barry and Malakai, and Jennie von Doellen of California; MONICA (Michael) Kiefer of St. Gregor and family Matthew (Ash) and Mitchell, both of St. Gregor; and ERIC (Denise) von Doellen of Saskatoon and his children Kane (Tori) von Doellen of Humboldt and children Beckham and Benson, and Bryn von Doellen (Jackson) of Martensville; brothers and sisters: Jack (Erika) Burt, Marg (Reno) Bigattini, and Kathy (Dan) Friedenberg, all of Kelowna, BC, Alfred (Nancy) Burt of Vancouver, BC and Lois (Don) Nicholls of Lake Country, BC; sisters-in-law Elsie Burt of Vernon, BC and Linda Burt of Edmonton, AB; and by Joe’s siblings in Germany: Mia, Werner, and Hilda; and by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
