Walter Arthur Block
July 11, 1934 – July 22, 2024

Walter Arthur Block went “home” to spend eternity with his Lord and Saviour on Thursday, July 11, 2024, which was his 90th birthday.  Walter was born on July 11, 1934, to Adolph and Natalia (nee Schroeder) Block at Grandpa and Grandma Schroeder’s homestead on SE 35-33-20 W2nd, in the RM of Prairie Rose.  Walter lived in the Illinois district for most of his life and was always a farm boy at heart.  He remembered running a John Deere D on steel wheels, pulling two binders, at the age of eight.  His parents had a rope tied around his waist, tied to the steering column, so he couldn’t fall off the tractor!  The Adolph Block family moved to Jansen in the late fall of 1945 and back out to a different farm in early spring of 1948.  Walter took the rest of his schooling back in Illinois School where he started.  He managed to get a grade 8 education, but it was his godly wisdom that would really shine through in his life. As a teenager, Walter met the love of his life, Adeline Adelma Teske, and together they enjoyed playing in the church orchestra where Walter played the guitar and Adeline the mandolin or banjo which was about the time when their courtship days started.  No surprise their home and lives would be filled with music! They were married on October 12, 1955, and lived in a log and clay house, which had been moved there many years earlier by Walter’s parents.  There was no electricity or cistern, but they got a phone one year later.  Walter and Adeline loved to sing together to pass the long winter evenings.  Walter would accompany the two of them with his guitar. In August 1959, they purchased a quarter section from Wm. Schindel, and moved in November that year.  Walter and Adeline really thought they had it made now as they had a 1 ½ storey home, with a windmill to pump the water for the cattle and a hip-roofed barn!  They farmed together side-by-side and always had cattle, hogs, chickens and of course, a very large garden!  The first thing they bought, even before they moved into their new home, was the largest deep freeze they could buy and that fall, Adeline put all the vegetables into their very own freezer!  No more taking freezer items over to her mom’s deep freeze. Walter and Adeline welcomed Donavon Grant as their first born on February 20th 1960, and then on October 21, 1962, Harlan Dallas was born. In 1964, Walter bought an accordion for Adeline and after some hours of practice, they were singing duets with their own accompaniment!  Connie Lee completed their family when she was born on March 31, 1968. In December 1971, Walter and Adeline purchased the farmhouse from Walter’s parents and now they too had running water!  That winter Walter bought their first electric organ which gave Adeline many hours of enjoyment. Music has been such a big part of Walter and Adeline’s family and together their family of five sang sacred music at various functions. Years later, Walter, Donavon, Harlan and Jack Robson (a wonderful family friend) joined together to form a men’s quartet, affectionately called, “Jack and the Blocks”.  Adeline, of course accompanied beautifully on the piano as they sang the old Southern Gospel music in many places. Walter and Adeline have many cherished memories of friends stopping in and having company over many Sundays for a wonderful meal.  Their legacy will certainly be one of faith in their God, hospitality to everyone who entered their home, and a love for music and using that talent for the Lord. Walter’s favourite verse was Proverbs 3:5,6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your path”. Walter’s legacy is certainly one of integrity, kindness, and faith in God.  He gave his life to the Lord as a young teenager and always sought to honour God in his life and business dealings.  He loved his family dearly – his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids.  You would hear him speak of that often when he prayed. Walter is survived by his son Donavon (Pearl) Block and family, Whitney and her daughter Riley, Cody (Kim) their children Emmett and Owen, Matthew (Jackie) and their children Ryder, Trigg and Bristol; son Harlan (Heather) Block and family, Janelle (Stephen) Martin and their children Kaeden, Kyler and Sienna; Chris (Michelle) and their children Sommer, Alexis, Jasper and Dallas; Dryden (Stefani) and their soon to be born, baby; daughter Connie (Steve) Wiebe and their son Ryan.  He is also survived by his sister-in-law Scarlett Block, and brother-in-law Dallas Langenberger; sisters-in-law Diane (Earl) Lissel, Marlene (Kent) Lee and Betty Lu Winslow; and many nieces and nephews.  Walter was predeceased by his loving wife of 62 years, Adeline Adelma (nee Teske); parents Adolph and Natalia (nee Schroeder) Block; sister Edna Langenberger; brother Gordon Block; nephew Ricky Block; in-laws Adolph and Helen (nee Harmel) Winslow, and brother-in-law Craig Vickaryous. The Funeral Service was held at Humboldt Bible Church, Humboldt, on Monday, July 15, 2024, at 1:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Sean Brandow.  Music ministry was provided by pianist Rosemary Fehr, and special music by Jack ‘n the Blocks.  The eulogist was Donavon Block, and tributes were given by Walter’s children and grandchildren.  As well, a Power Point Presentation was shown.  Pallbearers were Chris Block, Cody Block, Dryden Block, Matthew Block, Ryan Wiebe, and Stephen Martin.  Interment took place at Esk South Cemetery, Esk.  Memorial donations may be directed to ShareWord Global (formerly The Gideons), P.O.
