Isabelle Basset
October 13, 1921 – July 20, 2024

It is with great sadness that the family of Isabelle (nee Magus) Basset, 102 years, of Cudworth Nursing Home, announce her passing on Saturday, July 20, 2024. Isabelle was born on October 13, 1921 in Vonda, SK. She was the youngest child of Mytro and Maria and there were quite a few years between her and her other siblings. Her father passed away when she was still very young. Her mother later married Max Towstego and the family moved to the Peterson area.

She later relocated to Saskatoon to attend Gagnuer Academy of Sewing to become a seamstress.  While she was in Saskatoon, she was recruited for work in an ammunition and bomb factory in order to support the war effort. She moved to St. Catherines, ON, and began working. Isabelle’s seamstress talent came in handy to alter the women’s coveralls and hairnets so they could look fashionable. When her mother became ill, she returned to Saskatchewan to take care of her.  While she was out at a dance with friends, she was smitten by a very handsome accordion player in the band, Alain Basset Sr. After a quick courtship they were wed on October 21, 1944 at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Peterson. They began their life on the farm in the Peterson district and from this union two sons were born Kenneth (Ken) and Brian (Cookie). Unfortunately, Alain passed away in 1965, which left a young Isabelle to raise her sons.

Isabelle worked at a variety of jobs, usually in the culinary area. She cooked at “The Par” now known as the Junction and Holy Spirit Rectory to maintain her independence. Isabelle never remarried. Her motto was “Marry for money, not love. I married for love and the Bugger died”! Later she was able to provide childcare for her only two grandchildren until they started school, she thoroughly loved spending time with them. She always remained close to Andrea and Alain and the pet names she gave them will always be special. Alain became “Gator” and Andrea became “Goobers!” Isabelle was not one to be idle, later in life she would make perogies and cabbage rolls for sale. For extra income, but mainly because she loved to keep busy.  Her Ukrainian roots ran deep and Ukrainian Christmas’s were always a regular at her home filled with the best aroma. She was an excellent baker, especially her cinnamon buns and a great gardener. Ken and Isabelle were always in competition with their gardens. She always took very good care of herself and treated herself to regular appointments for her hair.

Isabelle was very close to her older sister Annie and brother Joe, they got into quite a bit of trouble from time to time. For relaxation she loved watching curling and was a loyal Rider fan.  Isabelle was very artistic, she crocheted, made quilts and stuffed animals. She loved doing jigsaw puzzles, colouring, playing Bingo and was a great bowler.

In 2007 after Cookie’s passing, Isabelle moved into Prairie View. She got busy with her puzzles.  As her health declined she eventually relocated the Cudworth Nursing in 2019, where she continued to be involved in activities there and loved playing Bingo.  The Nursing home staff said that she was a favorite of many and will be missed.

She had a great love for cats, her favorite of all was “Mookie.” When she moved off the farm and could no longer have pets, she received a replica stuffed cat from Andrea to bring her comfort. Isabelle’s home was always loving and welcoming to all with a large supply of Hawkins Cheezies and Old Dutch Salt and Vinger potato chips.

Isabelle had a deep faith and prayed the rosary daily, her rosary was always in her hands.  Even at 102 she was always very young at heart, had an infectious smile, loved to laugh, use colorful language and use snapchat filters with her great grandchildren. Every conversation ended with “I LOVE YOU, I LOVE YOU, I LOVE YOU!”

Isabelle will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her two grandchildren and four great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter: Alain (Amanda) Basset of Bruno and family Taylor (Kyle) Medernach and daughter Hayden Lea of Cudworth and Tristan Basset of Bruno; and Andrea (Neil) Dielschneider and family Trace Dielschneider (Sam Resch) and Davin Dielschneider, all of Saskatoon. She is predeceased by her husband Alain Basset Sr., sons Kenneth (Ken) and Brian (Cookie) Basset and daughter-in-law Mary Lea (Zentner) Basset.

A Prayer Service was held on Friday, July 26, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. and a Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, July 27, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. celebrated by Fr. Pius Schroh. Both services were held at St. Bruno R.C. Parish, Bruno, SK. Interment followed at St. Agnes R.C. Cemetery, Peterson, SK.  Memorial donations in memory of Isabelle may be directed to St. Agnes R.C.
