Meet Crystal Clarke, Reid Thompson Library's new head librarian.
Categories

Humboldt’s Reid Thompson Library and its patrons welcome new librarian Crystal Clarke. She is a familiar face in the community, having resided in Humboldt for the last 10 years. Now, she looks forward to stepping into a new role with the library.

Clarke’s new post is a perfect fit, given her background.

“I’ve always loved reading and books ever since I was a kid,” Clarke admits. “I was the branch librarian in Fort Qu’Appelle for a couple of years. I also have an English degree from university as well as an agriculture degree. I still try to do some writing here and there, and I still obviously read a ton of books and love to be surrounded by books.”

As a book lover, Crystal has become familiar with the wide array of programming carried out through the years. She is looking forward to continuing to foster that spirit and energy that's made the library a special place for patrons of all ages.

“Kate (Lucyshyn, former librarian) and the staff have done a great job with the programming since I’ve been here. There are always things going on at the library, and I’ve always really enjoyed anything that I’ve done here. I bring my daughter here regularly, and it’s just a really inviting space.”

Clarke appreciates that the library is a centre of community events and presentations, and she also commented on the daily hours that allow a high degree of access. She wants to see that level of programming continue with children’s activities, musical events, writers’ readings and workshops – all the staples that have come to be associated with the library.

“I’d love to see encouragement for kids, teens, tweens and adults to continue to come into the library for programming. Having musicians here is so fantastic, along with author readings, an active writers’ group and book clubs. Seeing all these programs going is so fantastic.”

The annual summer reading program is one of those highlights for kids, and this year, the uptake has been great, says Clarke. There has been capacity participation for most of the crafts, presentations and events associated with the busy summer schedule. Added to the summer excitement are the recent renovations to the library’s front reading area.

“The renovation looks fantastic and even better when its done in the front exterior. It’s made a big change in the library. It’s bright and open and airy. It’s been a fantastic project.”

Drop by the Reid Thompson Library to check out the renovation and meet Crystal and the staff to get involved with the great array of summer fun. Keep up with the latest events on the Reid Thompson Library Facebook page.
