Former MLA for Lumsden-Morse, Lyle Stewart died yesterday after a battle with cancer.

Stewart served as a Saskatchewan Party MLA for almost 24 years, first being elected to office in 1999 and retiring last year for health reasons. He was re-elected five times over his political career.

Aside from being the MLA for Thunder Creek and Lumsden-Morse, he was also the Minister of Agriculture, Minister of Enterprise and Innovation, and Provincial Secretary, and was interim leader of the Saskatchewan Party and Leader of the Opposition briefly in 2004.

Premier Scott Moe took to social media to speak about Stewart's life, saying, "His quiet strength and dedication to the people he served were an example to all of us who served with him."

Moe went on to say that flags would be lowered to half-mast at the Legislature in his honour.

Stewart was 73 years old.
