Saskatchewan RCMP held a press conference on July 25, 2024 to discuss crime statistics and yearly trends. Crime has increased in many areas. Rhonda Blackmore, assistant commissioner, says "I’m a firm believer in transparency and continuing to share the Saskatchewan RCMP story with our partners and the communities we serve – the positives and the challenges. The reality of the situation is that crime continues to increase across Saskatchewan RCMP jurisdiction."
With crime on the rise RCMP are also combatting staffing shortages. To alleviate pressure on detachments they have implemented strategies to respond to the increased workload. These strategies include temporary amalgamations of some RCMP detachments, using new and innovative tools such as unmanned aerial vehicles and shifting resources to ensure workloads are manageable. Blackmore also said "We’re committed to continuing our aggressive recruiting efforts to attract new RCMP officers to Saskatchewan"
Crime has increased in every district, North, Central and South. Noted from the central area violent firearm offences are on the rise with a 24% increase, violent crime has seen a 2% increase. The emergency Response team responded to a total of 94 calls in 2023 and have seen 46 responses so far this year. Homicide rate was 30 in 2023 and at 23 so far this year.
Intimate partner and family violence is down in the central district in Saskatchewan. It has saw a 2% decrease from this time last year.
As the population grows in Saskatchewan so does the crime rates and the pressures of our police forces.
